Well, I just found this cool place Zola's in Brookings - nice pizza. Near Medford, I like one of Bella Union's pizza's in Jacksonville, and Kaleidescope's pizza (spelling?).
Was asked to do a landscape design in Seaside two weeks ago, so I had the chance to sample a pizza from Fultano's in Cannon Beach, which I took to my campsite at Nehalem Bay State Park.
Anyhow, with Giovanni's in Beaverton, those are my pizza fave's from the north coast, to Medford. Four corners of a region.

I heard different about education. I am a teacher and I have spoken with teachers in Oregon and most said funding was really bad. Many said to go to WA instead. Teacher salaries are ok, but they said classroom funding was really bad. This also from Corvallis where I hear the system is nice. I teach multimedia design, digital arts, business, etc. and the word was no funding for technology and materials.
I had been looking at Oregon or Eureka/Arcata, but education and library funding is a concern as a teacher.
As for Redding vs Medford. I grew up in NorCal, never been to Medford, and I say stay the hell away from Redding. Redding is an armpit and a hot one at that.

Redding
my sister now lives in redding--our family all lived in oregon. she says that redding is very expensive, hard to find jobs and housing--also, if you have any young ones or teens, you may want to think it over. she has a friend who works as a doctor--the majority of kids smoke alot of pot, i was told because of boredom and other factors (lifestyle, etc). i just read about the sex offender problem (above)and, its strange, because when my 13 yr old came back from a visit, she has been harassed repeatedly (until i intervened) by a 21 year old. so, maybe that comment was right?? maybe something in the water--or the grass??LOL!!!

When moving for tax purposes, do your "research" carefully!!!!

its why I created this thread. I moved to texas and need to come back to the West. I moved here for the cheaper houses, but its a joke, after all the expenses, NOCAL and SOore are better deals beleive it or not. Not to mention that they are just much nicer. The heat....Redding heat wont affect me, try texas out for a few months during the summer. Dry heat is wonderful, the humidity is terrible where I live now.

I've lived in both Redding and Medford. I'm not positive about what exactly you are looking for. What, exactly, are your priorities and main concerns?
Redding and Medford are quite similar, I think. Redding has a much more "California" feel to it. I didn't feel that way when I lived there 9 years ago, but it has grown a lot and any kind of retail shop has popped up there like crazy. A plus, they are getting Trader Joes, which I'm very jealous of.
I live in Medford now and grew up here. I like it and I don't see a huge drug problem. Yes, meth exists here, as well as pot, etc. but, it's not as terrible as some posts on this forum would have you believe.
The libraries are REOPENING now, so closed libraries aren't an issue for now. Medford does seem to have some poor planners, but what city doesn't?
I think it comes down to do you want to be a "Californian" or an "Oregonian"?
Both have an abundant amount of outdoor activities. Both have colleges in their communities. Redding has Shasta College AND Simpson University. Medford has Rogue Community College, and SOU is right next door in Ashland. Both have overly priced housing, although I do think Redding is a tad bit higher. Our market is coming down a bit, as is Redding's. I think teacher's get paid more in Redding than here.
If you are interested in homeschooling, the Rogue Valley(Medford) is booming with families that homeschool. Right now, I believe our schools here in the valley have seen way better times. Many aren't even opening in time for the first day of school due to repairs on dilapidated buildings. Two schools have been shut down and one high school is going to be rebuilt - the other one was supposed to be extensively remodeled, but it's getting shafted, sadly.
I can't give any insight to the Redding school situation. I could find out, my sister in law used to teach there.
There are MANY good churches around here in Medford if that is important to you.
I wouldn't move to Redding - I just didn't like it as much as Medford, but that's just my opinion. Good luck!

Though some people on here contemplating a move to Redding might find this artical of some use. While I agree with most of it, I have hear about people who are happy with the job outlook. There is something in the air though. If you have lived in this area a long time you can just tell. The town is starting to get it's own ambiance, something a lot of us Reddingite's always complained about.
Calling all young movers, shakers and Gen-X entrepreneurs. Calling especially all you bright kids -- and almost middle-aged kids -- who grew up here but moved away to get a life and find a job:
The north state is ready and ripe for the picking.
A major shift is underway. Good news: The balance tips in your favor.
The longtime good ol' boy domination is losing its grip. Many retired. Some died. Others just ran out of steam.
This void leaves doors wide open for you young men and women to explore not only new businesses opportunities, but also elected leadership roles, school board positions and even service club memberships.
It's happening already. All over the north state, young people are playing more prominent roles.
Heck, even Todd Gandy, my new dentist, is a guy nearly young enough to be my son (or the son of a slightly older friend).
For you young people who've been gone awhile, you'll notice many good, new things have happened, such as the Sundial Bridge and an expanded Sacramento River Trail.

I had to giggle at this one... I live in So Cal and visited the Mr. when he had to work in Redding for a month. I felt like I was in the sticks. A lot of trailers and shacks.
The Mr works for the phone Co. and had to go out to some pretty iffy dwellings.
The folks there were nice- the Mr. is a wannabe hunter and enjoyed talking "guns" with the "boys". A beautiful river ran through part of the town, as I recall.
The towns folk walked around in sweats and "Napolean Dynamite" snow boots. They didn't seem too worried about their image! Their cars ran the gamut from battered pick up with requeset dog in back to wired-fender subaru.
It was raining cats and truck dogs when I was there (thus the need for techs from So Cal!). It was pretty green.
To me, it felt small and reminded me of Gold Mining Country.
Remember I live in Concrete Suburban Nirvana. The Coto De Caza girls-or- The REAL wives of Orange County, as some know them by- are REALLY concerened with their car, house, botoxed lips. And talk about judgemental!! I see them in stores around here and don't try to say hi if you don't have your Gucci sunglasses, mini skirt, Uggs and Range Rover.
Cheese & Crackers!! I gotta git out now!

We lived in Medford and went to redding often to work the several big flea markets.
It was hot both places and we preferred Redding. It also is 30,000 larger and that should be a better business climate and more things to do. Mt. Shasta is very beautiful too and on a hot day in redding - it's a short drive to shasta lake. We always liked working the flea markets -even when we didn't need the money and if we move to redding from here (missouri) we will do that again. Medford has nice mountains but not Mt. Shasta. <G>

We don't need to divide people up by age

My wife and I are older and we don't feel that areas need to try to get just young people or that older people aren't just as good. Why does my dentist have to be as young as my son - why does it even matter?
