I like Redding better - it's larger too - by 30,000

But one of the biggest differences in my opinion is Redding is "California", and Medford is "Oregon", and you get a different feel based a lot just on that! Redding is probably growing faster, many coming from areas south in Cali. That kind of explains the first sentence of this paragraph!
However, Redding has an "In 'n Out" Burger...a definite advantage!

I ran an insurance agency in Medford in 1981-82 and my wife worked for a well established one - it was in the recession and my wife's job was at risk and people weren't buying anything. I took a temp job at S. Oregon State College in Ashland - that's and working flea markets from Grant's Pass, Medford, Phoenix(OR) and Redding kept us going - but barely.
We love the Bucaneer's Pizza places - sorry they went down, as well as Abby's and Pappy's. I played at a club in Jacksonville Or with Starlene and her band. But there was nothing to do most of the time. Redding always has something to do, with Mt. Shasta there so close - and in summer it's hot anywhere and swamp coolers work great in both Medford and Redding.

We loved the Fiesta Pizza there but Bucaneer's was the best in our view.

Alright, here's the deal. I'm medford born and rasied, and I've lived in and have relatives who live in anderson (very close to redding), so I'm very familiar with both areas. In Redding the people are friendlier. Medford folk don't take kindly to out of towners, especially people from california. The crime is much worse in Medford than Redding, mainly because of the gang infestation. Take a drive off of exit 30 east towards fred meyer and you'll see what I'm taking about. I wouldn't suggest driving alone down there at night, let alone walking. Southern Medford is slightly nicer, but if you live on east barnett you'll be closer to the hospital, which can be a pain w/ traffic, noise ect. We've also got a liberal policy on sex shops and adult entertainment here in Medford, as does the rest of the state, so don't expect your kids to stay sheltered. Redding does have more sex offenders than medford, but you won't hear as much about violent crime or robbery as you will in medford. I would suggest Redding myself, but I gotta stay true to my hometown and give it a fair shot too. and try Talent. It's just south of medford but it's got that small town feel you won't get in the city...

Just wondering where you got the info that crime is worse in Medford than Redding? I don't know too much about Medford but I lived in Redding for 10 years and there was a lot of crime there from gangs, sexual predators, bank robberies took place all the time along with shootings, violent crimes and so forth, in fact Redding was a dumping ground for parolees getting out of prison! They would come up on the greyhound and be dumped off there.
I moved away from there a few short years ago and am now in Utah but don't really care for the desert. I still would rather live in Redding than UT Northern CA is beautiful. We're selling now and heading to Grants Pass area. We need to be in tree country and mountains!

I agree with wanting to be in tree country and mountains....Texas made me appreciate trees and mountains. YOu don't know what you have till its gone. I know that utah is the desert, but you must live in an area that does not have mountains, as I thought Utah was mountainous. Grants pass is very pretty

Utah is more mountainous and pretty when you go north. We're in Southern Utah which is pretty barren there are some mountains but they are smaller and mostly brown. Trees are very sparse mostly what people plant. The hills around here are mostly small juniper and sage brush, tumble weeds, etc.
We also didn't realize what we had until we left and now after almost 3 years here in dry, windy UT we are ready to head back to the PNW.
BTW I also lived in TX for 8 years of my childhood...still remember how barren that was!

well Grants pass is a dream land scape for you.....I almost made that move. Just could not find a job. I ended up moving to Colorado, which is a good alternative to the PNW. Mountains, Sunshine, and pine trees. Texas was a horrible idea. The result of not enough research. We just moved last week. In fact this is my thread that I started when I was researching redding and medford. My seach was for a place with mountains trees and sunshine. Medford would have fit the bill, as would have Redding. Houses turned out to be a little to expsensive in Redding. Even though I live in happy bliss for now in Colorado, I am not kidding myself. I know I have to return to PNW. Its just home. I wonder if Utah is more like Eastern Colorado or like Eastern Oregon.

Not sure what Eastern CO looks like but if it is like Cortez than it's probably similar to UT. I have friends in Cortez CO that say the terrain there is much like the Southern part of Utah. There is a different kind of beauty here...Zion Park, Bryce Canyon, Moab, Park City, Cedar breaks to name a few very beautiful to visit..have to drive a ways to get there but growing up in Northern CA all you had to do was step out side your door and it's all around you. Yep I'm very partial to the PNW that's where I left my heart-hopefully we can find jobs in Grants Pass. We're pretty versatile in that respect and have never had a problem finding work in all of the places we've lived...just waiting for the house to sell... I read every thread on this forum about that part of Oregon. It's been very helpful so far...just wish I had discovered this forum before making the big move to UT.

I see what you did there, but it's all good, i got all the time in the world, even for smartasses.
How do i know? well lets see. i've lived in medford for a combined total of 14 years, watched it grow from a town of about 50,000 to a grand total of 72,000+. My uncle worked law enforcement in the nearby town of central point, and even 10 years ago, he expressed a grave concern about the growing meth problem and rising number of street gangs migrating into the area. Today, that problem has grown to a point where it's almost insufferable, and the once quiet retirement community of Medford Oregon has become a breeding ground for drug and street crime.
Redding is no saint town by any means. And as I've said before, there are more sex offenders in Redding than Medford. BUT, Medford (especially north medford) has more Murders, Robberies, Rapes and Drug Crimes per capita than both Redding and nearby Grants Pass combined. i've lived here forever, so obviously I know what i'm talking about, but you don't have to take my word for it. Google it, or better yet, check the crime statics right here on city data. Medford Ore is the central hub for crime in southern oregon.
