Well, I grew up in the Redding area and now have a home in Medford. Both areas have been hit by the housing market problems. But for my money, there is just more to do in Redding. Medford supposedly has good weather, but I think that is in comparison to other Oregon towns. When compared to Redding, it isn't much of a match. The winters in Redding last from mid-December to the first of March. And, they are mostly rain at that with very little snow. Last year we had four snow falls, one of 11."
Most years in Redding you were out riding your bike in February and the weather stayed good until at least November.
Another reason is that there are still a lot of building lots in Redding. In Medford, several families hold a tight fist to nearly all subdivisions. Nothing like that in Redding.
By the time you add up taxes, they are just about the same. Medford has an unusually high property tax levy to make up for a lack of sales tax. Redding has both, but the property tax is not as excessive, evening out the situation.
Redding has an established junior (community) college. Medford's community college missing on several cylinders.
Redding has two lakes, Shasta and Whiskeytown, with plenty of water sports and fishing. Medford has several smaller lakes, but really nothing compares to Shasta.
Snow skiing is further away in Redding. In Medford, Ashland is about a half hour from house to hill. Figure an extra hour for Redding.
Land is a lot cheaper in Redding. You can still get a 5 acre parcel in the country. Not so much in Medford. That makes it much easier to buy and build.
Both have regional airports. Medford's airport is undergoing a significant remodel though.
Medford has two high schools and four nice golf courses. Redding has a half dozen or so. Several are new. Redding has at least a four good golf courses.
Nights are warm in Redding. You can go out and not freeze for six or seven months. Not so much in Medford. That may be true a few weeks for the year in Medford.
Redding has Jack's Bar and Grill. Nothing close in Medford. Best steaks in the world.
Four hours from Redding you will find, the San Francisco 49er's, Raiders, Giants, Athletics, Golden State Warriors and Sacto Kings.
In Medford, it the Trail Blazers.
I lived in west Texas for two years too. So, I know why you want to move back.
Best of Luck,
Steve
