I would choose Medford over Redding because of the cultural opportunities. However, Redding has one plus that neither Medford nor the entire state of Oregon have--IN 'N OUT BURGER!!!!!

Howdy Folks;.....................
We have Loved living in the beautiful forested mountains of southwest OR fer over four lustrums. We get many more sunny days then cloudy ones. We need some rain to help keep the forests green & reduce fire danger. We get some snow but not too much here........................ ..............I spend a lot of time fishin' fer bass C&R, & exploring the BLM lands fer new fishin' holes & beautiful scenery including the wild critters we share the land with as neighbors.
In a thread last nite i put down some towns i think would be nice to live by/in

My husband comes back from Iraq the first of May we have money saved to go anywhere and want to go to Oregon. We are not looking to buy (so property tax not issue) but rent and want to rent a house. I homeschool so schools are not an issue but....I want a place that is not a huge city that has family festivals and is somewhat of a "small town" (coming from phoenix) We are outdoors people and would love to find somewhere to live "outside" of town. My husband does plumbing and I am concerned about work. What is job market like and how is new constrution in the area? We are looking at Medford but would be open to all suggetions....Thanks

Define "travel" - you mean drive a car through, stay at a hotel, eat dinner in restaurants, walk around town, pretty much all the normal stuff? Sure.
Hitch-hike, hang around in bars until closing, drink heavily, engage in risky behavior? It's still not any less safe than any other small town.

Thanks. I'll be going to the Guy Finley Retreat in Merlin and staying in Grants Pass at a resort. So, I'll be driving back and forth from the retreat to the hotel in Grants Pass. I suppose I will go site seeing and eat at restaurants. I won't have much time to explore.

Have yet to go to an In n Out Burger, but my spouse loves that place. Interesting that you mentioned it as a priority. As for Redding or Medford...been to both. Lived in northern California for years, will never go back to CA to live again. Oregon is great, but the forestry area you are desiring, I just didn't see that while in Medford. Traveling on over the Ashland was very nice area. Prices a bit high (real estate), but nice town. We met a few people working there in Ashland who had been working prior in our Southeast Alaska tourist town. Very unexpected, but then the town of Ashland is very similar to our tourist (home)town in Southeast AK, but with SUN !!
