Day five in a row of soaking rain with sun breaks and near constant drizzle. Another mostly gray day.

"I don't think that western Oregon has actually seen a really intense winter storm since the storm in February 1989, actually. As in, one that sweeps in and dumps several feet of snow over a widespread part of the lowlands. "

I beg to differ - two years ago we got 2' of snow at our place on Chehalem Mountain (el. 1000' in the Willamette Valley). I wasn't here for '89 but people told me that was the most snow in 20 years (which might well be 1989). I shoveled the driveway three times.

These numbers were taken from Hyslop Field, Corvallis' official NWS station:

Dec, 2009
Average Maximum; 42.8; -2.8
Average Minimum; 29.1; -4.8...8 degrees on the 10th. Coldest since 1990.

Jan, 2010
Average Maximum; 50.9; +5.4
Average Minimum; 38.6; +5.6....Warmest January since 1953

Feb, 2010
Average Maximum; 54.1; +3.7
Average Minimum; 38.0; +2.9...Warmest February since 1995

Crunch the numbers and the winter of 2009/2010 comes out to a respectable 2.4 degrees above the long term average. The perception that this winter was unusually cold probably came from that early December cold snap. It was pretty brutal, but overall this past winter was a mild one. Wish I could say the same for the one coming up. The climate wonks predict 2010/2011 to be as nasty as they come.......

Last December, tender shrubs like purple princess flower that had gone unscathed for 20 years were killed to the ground in Brookings.
Right now its pouring buckets of rain, temperatures are 15 degrees below seasonal norms. There's snow lining the roads on Hwy. 199 going into California.

Oregon was in a warm cycle of the PDO from 1978 to 2006. We went back into the cold cycle four years ago and will continue to have colder, wetter weather than average for the next 25-35 years.
