I've been reading this forum for a few months now, and WOW, what a ton of information! My husband, daughter and I are looking to move to Oregon early next summer and need some advice as to where to look. We are planning a trip for this fall to narrow down our options, but, well, Oregon's a big place. So far we've really focused on Eugene and a little bit on Portland. I'm leaning more towards Eugene; my husband towards Portland. I'm sure there are other places that we're missing though! Here's what we are looking for -

*A "bigger" city that has enough jobs, shopping, recreation, etc. available so we don't have to drive everywhere.

*I'm a teacher, hubby works for a company that manages 401k plans - we need jobs in these areas.

*Good, progressive schools

*We currently have 2 cars - would LOVE to get rid of one, or both! Is it possible to live in Portland without a car?

*Liberal area, but doesn't necessarily need to be waaaaay liberal, kwim?

Really we are just down-to-earth people, looking for a nice, laid-back place to live. We live in Mississippi currently, and just can't take it anymore. We're originally from Wisconsin (near Madison) and would go back there, but the winters are killer!

Any advice/suggestions would be great! We just really want to get ideas of where we should look when we come this fall. Thanks!

The only town in Oregon that I am aware that will allow you to use public transportation conveniently is Portland. They have the MAX Light Rail system. It extends over a large area of the city.

I think Eugene only has a bus system. I don't think it would be the most pleasant experience to use the bus system in a town that size.

As far as things available, both have a wide variety. Obviously Portland is going to have a lot more available withing it's more diverse communities.

I like Portland better. If you are looking for a smaller area, then Eugene could fit the bill. Eugene doesn't have the diversity that Portland does. Both are beautiful though.

Eugene seems to have a pretty good bus system for a town that size.
