Moving with Pets
I just got back from Medford last night. I was there for 3 days looking for a house to rent. We are moving there middle of September. There are lots of places to rent but the problem is, most of them have a NO PET policy. I have been renting for a few years now in L.A. and surrounding areas, and I've had a hard time finding a place to rent, but by far, this was the toughest!!! Some have 25 lb or smaller only rules ,but most just WILL NOT take pets!!!
I have a pitbull, and a rottweiller, and a terrier-mix (not to mention 3 cats). Okay, I have 2 of the top no-no breeds. It doesn't matter that I am a vet and my fiancee is a dog trainer , and that I am currently renting and I have references, and that we're responsible owners. Apparently, it's the insurance companies of these houses(most of which are investment properties) that are against pets. When they find out that there are animals there, they will stop insurance coverage.
So I was there for 3 days, and only one was promising enough to even consider me. We've faxed our application forms and are still waiting for their decision. I was literally in tears last Tuesday because of desperation. What will we do and where will we have our stuff delivered??? There is one other house that we might end up with, but it's so small and old! We still haven't closed that option yet, because in the end, it might not be a matter of option at all! We eventually want to buy a house ,but do not want to make hasty decisions.
So anyway, for all those who are moving with pets, good luck looking for a place to rent!

I live in Idaho and know for a fact that nearly 95% of homeowners will not allow pets.
Here's a tip; check with a local boarding kennel or humane society to see if they know of critter friendly realtors. That might get you a foot in the door once you explain to them your furkids are fully vaccinated and have been spayed/neutered. I know a few of our clients who are realtors accept them on those grounds. If the cats are declawed that's another benefit.

I found this website [url=http://www.peoplewithpets.com[URL] but unfortunately it doesn't list anything in the Medford area. There's a "Relocation Help Form" you can fill out though and maybe they can find somebody who can help you. Good luck! I hope you find something. How frustrating!

We ran into the same problem.
We moved from Denver to NE Oregon and had only 3 days to find a place to live. Nobody would accept our two, 10-pound, neutered, housebroken Foo-Foo lap-dogs (Bichon Frise). We never had a problem finding pet-accepting rentals in Denver. But, Oregon is obviously different in this regard.
We also didn't want to buy a house for at least a year. We prefer to take our time and get to know the area, so we will be happy with our purchase.
We ultimately wound up renting a small apartment in a town 30 miles away from the job we moved for - but at least it's a month-to-month contract.
That's the good thing about Oregon rentals. Month-to-month seems to be the norm. Try getting that in Denver LOL!

I can commiserate with you. We're looking to move to OR sometime next yr. and so far every place I've called for Coos Bay, North Bend area do NOT accept pets in rentals! We've got the foo foo dogs too! 1 min-pin and 1 mini italian greyhound! Together they weigh less than 20lbs! But, we've encountered the same thing! Wonder why they won't take em?

Medford Oregon Rentals and Pets
I had the same problem: Moved from Virginia to Medford. Try renting a place in Medford long distance from Virginia. Frustrating doesn't cover it. What I did (and it worked) was placed a classified ad in the local Medford newspaper. I said I was looking for a rental under $X and that I had a dog - I also mentioned things like good income, etc... I received several calls. One was perfect. as a matter of fact I'm writing this message while I sit in our new rental. We got a great rental price and the entire yard (including the driveway) is fenced - great for my Bloodhound. We also have a cat and a parrot. So, I do agree that it is difficult to find pet friendly rentals in southern Oregon but it is possible.
Good luck.

I may get crucified for this but, how about giving the dogs away?
Very hard to understand how an animal can effect living decisions.
Go ahead, let the venom begin.

I suppose you wouldn't have any problem giving away your first born if you had one???

Much of the problem has to do with high demand for pet-friendly rentals. It's kind of like trying to find a no-smoking hotel room in Ashland in the summer on short-notice. Most rooms ARE no-smoking but they are the ones that fill up first. Rentals that allow pets tend to have less turn-over because the renters know that finding a new place will be tough.
Another problem is irresponsible pet-owners who have ruined the situation for everyone else. The law places considerable responsibility for liability on the landowner, rather than the tenant. That's a risk many landowners prefer not to take.
Posting your need in this forum was a good idea. Maybe someone will know of something.
