Job Market in Medford?
Hello Mefordonians, Medforders?,
I'm really wanting to relocate to Medford where the climate is warmer (bet you don't hear that often), I live in Olympia, WA. My wife works for CarpetOne and she could easily transfer. However I have 19 years in with the State's Attorney General's Office. I do the computer graphics and video production using Macs. I do things like film legal training seminars and create DVDs, coutroom exhibits and desktop publishing. I'm quite versatile and love new technology, I'm also a good self teacher of new things. I use the Adobe Creative suite and Final Cut. I also do all the duplication of DVD, CD, VHS and cassette. So what's the job market for someone in my trade? Any state jobs like that down there or would I need to go private sector?
My hobbies are wine and beer making and musclecar restoration. I want to get a couple acres to grow wine grapes and maybe have a small winery. I've been wine making since 82 and beer making since 92. I owned a wine and beer making store for 7 years here in WA. I love making red wines like Merlot and brew all kinds of ales.

The local paper should be of help. http://www.mailtribune.com/
I have only passed through and flown over Medford so I am not a rocket scientist when it comes to Medford. I did read today that have more clear days than any other Oregon city west of the Cascades. It is also important to note that Medford is growing its population up 12% over 2000. That means incomes are on the rise.
Lastly, it is very pretty from the air.

Lantz with your skills you should not have much of a problem finding a decent job in Medford. However, the pay will probably be less than you are making now, and unless you get a state job, benefits may not be very good, if offered at all. Also housing costs might be more than you are use to, although I am not familiar with Olympia. I would definately check out the cost of renting/buying a home in the area first. Expect to pay between $250 to 320K for a decent place.

I can vouch for the clear days and the Rogue Valley being BEAUTIFUL from the air (Crater Lake, Rogue River, Table Rocks, Mt. McLoughlin, etc). Clear2land, you must be one of my aviating brethren, no?
However, don't count on the clear winter days so much. More often that not, from late Nov. to maybe mid-Jan, Medford is socked in with a layer of fog so thick you can cut it, sometimes for up to 2 or 3 weeks on end. Oddly enough, drive to Ashland, or anywhere generally a few hundred feet higher elev, and you're in the clear.
Overall, Medford is a great place in many ways. I love living here. Hope this helps!

From the air
Hi Positive G:
Yes, I do fly Cessna 172's mostly. I'm not IFR but I do know how to ask for Radar Vectors to the ILS. Now that is a bunch of fun. I'm looking at Grants Pass just so I can shoot the ILS over at Medford. Does Grants Pass share the same fog or is it just in the valley?
There are six Restricted airfields north of MEF. Are any of those Airparks? I am going to look at the Independence Airpark. There are a lot of good hamburger runs in and around Albany and Corvallis. I am used to talking on the radio so I have to have access to Salem, Eugene, and Medford. I learned to fly at McNary Field in Salem. My Piper Cub climed a lot faster without an instructor on board.
Here is a link you can use. It has all the aeronautical charts we use and you can drag them across the screen and zoom in and out.

Enjoy,
Dan

I've seen fog in and around Grants Pass in the winter, but the bad stuff seems to just hang out in Medford, especially around the airport. The Rogue Valley's not the greatest place to practice - or actually be - on instruments. I took a 172 up to shoot the ILS 14 and it took 45 minutes to climb, get vectored, and do the miss. Too many mountains, and too much ice in the clouds that high up.
I just passed by McNary for the first time yesterday when I was in Salem. Nice little airport - looks like it gets a good amount of warbird traffic.
I just got my t-wheel signoff - let me know if you bring that Cub of yours on down here.

It looks like 1-800-wetherbrief is the best way to keep yourself VFR.
Clubs are the way to go here. I live about 30 miles from Montgomery so flying takes up a fair bit of time I hope to eliminate in Oregon.
Yes, you are right, Salem has a lot of warbirds on the field. There was a P-51 there when I learned how to fly in the mid 60's. It burns 50 gallons an hour so a hamburger run can be a bit on the high side.
Are any of those restricted fields north of MEF airparks?
Thanks for the update.

If by "airparks" you're referring to private residential aviation communities, no, I don't know of any in the immediate area. I'm not exactly in that market though, so I may not be that well informed. I learned to fly in Oklahoma, and moved back here in Dec. 05; I haven't been flying around Oregon for that long, either.
There doesn't seem to be that much destination-wise to fly into down here...a few dirt/grass strips here and there (Beagle Sky Ranch is one I've flown into), the coast (Gold Beach, Cape Blanco, Cresecent City, Brookings) has some nice little airports with beach access, etc.
Hope this answers your question.
