family-friendly towns
I am considering a move to Grants Pass. I love all the creeks and river access. I am concerned about the employment thing. I was wondering if anyone out there has some "favorites" on towns with the friendly small-town atmosphere that is affordable with decent jobs to be had. I have 4 kids ranging from 15 down. Thanks for any input!

I'm promoting Keizer today!
I just found this website and read through some of these postings. I felt like today I should promote my town! We live in Keizer, a small community outside of Salem. We are close to everything- 45 minutes from Portland, 45 minutes from the beach. There are many places along the rivers here to fish, as well as Detroit Lake, which funny thing is-also 45 minutes away! Check out our newspaper: Keizertimes.com...there are even photos of events that took place in Keizer, like our Iris Festival parade. Goodluck!

Keizer is a nice little town.
Using Google Earth, a trip search between Lincoln City at the beach and Keizer shows 65 miles @ one hour and forty five minutes - my guess is probably 70 to 80 minutes if thats the right distance. Neskowin was slightly farther. Thats about the same time to get from Portland's west suburbs to Seaside. Not too long.
Heather, have you looked at RogueValleyJobs.net ?? Been hearing it on cable here lately - should include Grants Pass.
The Medford Mail Tribune website should list some jobs for the Grants Pass area too.
Going to rent, or buy?

Heather,
I appriciate your concern for your family first. I was in your same situation over a year ago. I have moved from the Seattle area to Bend, OR. I can tell you I have never met so many people that have been as supporting and friendly as i have found here in Bend there are a few cities here that fit your needs and wants. I highly recomend visiting bend if you havent yet. there are plenty of good jobs and affordable housing. and for the kids they will love it here mine do and think that bend is the best place to live.

family friendly town
I would recommend Myrtle Creek. Pop about 3500 with good schools and many community activities throughout the year. It's a friendly town with the bigger city of Roseburg just 20 minutes away for major shopping. I have lived here for 30 years coming from NYC. It is also close (10 minute drive) to a very large Indian casino "7 Feathers" that employs several thousand people. Umpqua Community College in Roseburg. Roseburg Forest Products & Mercy Hospital are also two of our largest employers in Douglas county, both located 20 minutes away. Also housing is very affordable.

My partner and I live in Roseburg. Moved from NC two years ago. We love it here. Roseburg is an odd bird in that it is both conservative and yet liberal at the same time. There is a thriving Unitarian church here and one shouldn't exist in a community of this size. Likewise, there is a great arts center and an exceptional natural & cultural history museum (one of the best in the state). The community is very supportive and youth sports are especially big here. All is all there is more going for this area then you would expect for its size.
On the real estate side of things the west coast no matter where you are will be higher than many other parts of the nation. Roseburg is twice the cost of our town in North Carolina. Roseburg is less pricey than Oregon's larger towns though. We just bought a house $145K- two bedroom, office, ... A great deal in this part of the world.
Other places we've been to and really like are Ashland, Bend, and Hood River. All very young and dynamic.
In all honesty if moving to Oregon you can't go wrong!

Hi. My name is Patti LeBlanc. I am a Realtor in Albany, Oregon. About 25 miles southwest of Albany is the little town of Philomath. Recently the Philomath school district received an excellent rating in the state of Oregon. Philomath has a population of about 4000, is 5 miles west of Corvallis, home of the Oregon State Beavers. The city sits at the foot of the coast range, and is just beautiful.
