Smile Small town, historic, mild temps, kid friendly

I am looking to move to Oregon and know I will love the difference from Socal but need to get more specific. I have little kids, I home school, am NOT doing the Christian thing and we like to be out and about at cultural centers and IN life. I like the small town appeal and just want to make life more simple. I do like cooler climates and rain- although not all the time- appeals to me and coastal weather is great. I want a medium income area. traffic doesn't appeal to me but being close to shopping for essentials in arts and groceries is. I would like a college town and I do like mountains and rivers. I love the coastal areas. Any ideas? I want a small population like under 10,000 and I love historic buildings and the small town appeal that I am just not getting much in Los Angeles. I know this is broad but I think there is something out there for me and my fam. Oh ya, my husband works at a top notch art college as a managing editor and has an interest staying in the art school or school environment. We can't come without a job so somewhere near a town that has work. HELP! Thanks for any...

If coastal is not an absolute, I think Cottage Grove would be what you are looking for.

It has 9k population, is close to Eugene, which is where the Oregon State University resides, The Ducks!!!

Heh. Little brain fart there, Buddy. OSU is in Corvallis. Go Beavers! It's that other state school that lives in Eugene.

Oregon, our alma mater,
Where the men of iron are found,
In the bushes with their girlfriends,
Making love upon the ground.
This goes on 'til early morning,
When the cops break up the fun,
There'll be a Milll-iii-taaar-y wedding,
For the sons of Oooorreeegun!

*U of O fight song lyrics, brought to you by the Oregon State Alumni Association.

Astoria is historic on the coast. Mayor got busted drunk driving a few time - so consider what that's worth (who knows ??)

Oregon City is historic.

Jacksonville by Medford is historic (rather expensive real estate)

Forest Grove seems a little bit historic.
