Hi Folks,

Other than Craigslist, anybody have any good ideas on how to find a decent rental house around Mitchell, Dayville, John Day, Spray, Mount Vernon, etc? We're interested in purchasing property out that way but would love to rent first while we get to know the area better.

We're thinking we'll need to post flyers in the different grocery stores & Post Offices, but if you've got a tip for us, we're listening.

Thanks for your help,
Mary

Drive around and read signs. A local realtor might be helpful.

The problem is that those are all small, small, SMALL towns. Spray has 160 residents according to the cities official website, Mount Veron about 500, Dayville is 150... Mitchell is technically a ghost town and the rest aren't too far off. John Day is probably your best bet by far to find rentals of any sort and is pretty much where you're going to have to go to buy groceries and gas.

Oh - Hit up local cafes and ask the waitresses. The towns are small enough that they will know all the regulars and know who's got something to rent or not.

Remember - that all is farming/cattle country with a small smattering of Timber. Jobs are scarce, and even then tend towards the "12 hours straight, minimum wage, back breaking" types.

We are vacationing in Oregon soon and we use VRBO® is Vacation Rentals By Owner (http://www.vrbo.com/ - broken link) (Vacation Rentals by Owner) we stay a week here and there but I do see rates for monthly rentals and you may be able to deal with an owner to get a better price. For us this is cheaper than hotels most of the time. I know there are other rental websites, just Google 'Rental Homes'.

The homes here in the link are kind of large for one person, but you might want to check out the motels in the area to see if they offer monthly rentals. Here is the link: Rentals

Perchance he might get a small travel trailer and stay in a campground? could be far cheaper than renting.
