My husband and I, along with our 5mth old, are thinking of moving there from Oak harbor, Wa and I was wondering how is the job market and the weather? I would like a little less rain than what I recieve here and my husband is getting out of the Navy in about 1yr 1/2 so we would need new jobs. Also I would like to go back to College and my husband would like to start are there any Colleges near by?

Also we are multi-racial family and I would like to know how tolerant and diverse is the community?

There are plenty of colleges in Eugene. Lane county tends to be liberal and Eugene very much so. I would not image that race would be an issue.

Job market is not amazing in Cottage Grove, but it really depends on what line of work you are in. It is better in Eugene. My husband and I commute to Eugene for our jobs. It is rainy, I'm not sure what it is like compared to Washington, but it usually rains pretty steadily through late fall, winter, and early spring. But when it is sunny, it is gorgeous.
The college is in Eugene. University of Oregon is the 4-year college. I went there. Highly recommend it, it was a great school. There is also Lane Community College which has a branch with some classes in Cottage Grove.
As for the race issue, don't expect a lot of diversity. Like I said, I don't know much about Washington, but I come from an ethnic family and - coming from the east coast - we were very much surprised at the lack of diversity here (especially in Cottage Grove). It is not so apparent in Eugene because the college community rounds out the diversity a little bit more. Although I will say I haven't encountered 'outright' racism, a lot of people are pretty laid back here.

20-25 miles away (freeway drive on I-5).
Weather is rainy for a good portion of the year. This gives a good idea of what it is like (although I'd say it is warmer than it indicates during June, July, and August):

I'd like to know about the cable internet too. I've been very attracted to Cottage Grove because I too love the smaller towns. My husband will likely be working in Eugene. I work from home and have to download my work, since my boss lives in Sacramento. Being able to have high speed internet is pretty much mandatory for me to continue working. Thanks!

Dear Jiffin4java:
What kind of work do you do? I'm just curious since I live in Sacramento!
Thanks.
