Lightbulb Home Heating Methods

Autumn is approaching and soon it will be tme to think about heating our homes. There are many different ways to heat a house, apartment or ? whatever you happen to live in. Some of us use multiple methods to heat up the place.
How many different kinds of home heating do we use here in Oregon? How are you heating your home when the days and nights become cold?

Fortunately, we find the winters here along the coast are mild so although we have electric baseboard wall heaters in all our rooms, two or three turned on together combine to heat our whole house to our liking. Mostly though, we use them to take out the winter dampness along with a dehumidifier which also puts out some heat. Oh yeah, we have a skylight on the western slope of our roof so that helps to bring in the warm afternoon sun.

I had not considered that a skylight would be good for adding heat. That is interesting. No It doesn't get real cold here on the coast but we still have got to use some heating.

I have wall heaters in my house. They have fans that blow out the heated air. It also helps get rid of the damp. When winter comes along I use my pellet stove which will heat the whole house.

It's true that we like it cooler than the next guy but the heat is needed to keep out the winter dampness. Something else we use are ceiling fans. We have vaulted high ceilings that when using the ceiling fans, circulates the cooler air downward during the summer months and by changing the direction, brings down the warm air during the winter months.

Well it time to dust off all the home heating devices and get them going. Most of the daytime tempertures in Oregon have been okay but it's geting cool at night.

I've been using my pellet stove for the last 2 evenings. I shut it off when I go to bed as my bedroom has a heater.

Have you started heating your home yet?

we use space heaters. No fireplace/pellet stove in here unfortunatly, i really miss mine! sob, - and with electric prices - ugh - So we keep everyone in one room pretty much, then use the space heater in there, lotsa warm thick socks and pjs. And thank goodness, everyone but the two smalls have waterbeds, so thats no heat in those rooms needed. - WE went all last year w/o any insulation in the attic, man, was it chilly!! lol - so, at least we know it'll be better this year!

We've had a woodstove for the past several years (with electric blanket for the bed), but had a Mitsubishi mini-split installed last month. Seems to be working well.

I saw a weather forecast for the Bay area and it's expected to be cold tonight. Yep it's going to be another night for the pellet stove. It looks like I'll need to add another blanket to the bed as well. We're getting unusually cold temps at night and sunny days.

Tiffela brought up a good point about the insulation. Yes having insulation can make a big difference. We have it in the attic and below the floors. I don't really know if there is insulation in the walls since I've had no reason to tear into a wall. However I will say that this house holds the heat in better once the house is warm then some other houses I've had.
