Hi to all newbie here.
The wife and I are making a road trip and would like some suggestions. Our rough draft is as follows: fly in to PDX, head towards Newport and stay the night, drive down to Reedsport and continue on to Roseburg, stay the night at Roseburg. Head out from Roseburg in the early AM, cut thru Crater Lake (via the umpqua scenic route) arrive in Medford (stay the night and fly out MFR am time.) Finally, we are thinking about moving to the area in a couple of years, if we like what we see.
We have already booked our flight for next month. Thanks again!

Sounds like you want no time in Portland, in which case I'd get straight to the coast via highway 6 to Tillamook and then head south to Newport. There are some nice places to stay in Newport - I'd choose something in Nye Beach as there are also some good restaurants there and it's pleasant to walk around. The drive between Florence and Reedsport is pretty much sand dunes with an occassional glimpse of ocean, so I'd leave the coast at Florence and get to I-5 in Eugene. There is nothing special in Roseburg itself though there are some good wineries in the area and the landscape is very nice, but I would go east of Roseburg and stay in one of the places along the Umpqua River. The Steamboat Inn is about 40 miles east of Roseburg and there are several others. Your trip is very do-able in your timeframe. Enjoy Oregon!

I'm a bit confused by what you mean "moving to the area if we like what we see" and covering from Portland to Medford. You will see some gorgeous scenery, but that won't tell you anything about whether or not Oregon is the right place for you to move to.

You want to move to Medford?? Of all the places on earth, why there? It really is a dumpy and depressed town. I know I use to live near it. If you are going to the coast, don't forget to see Cape Perpetua and Yachats. I lived there for 4 years and it is one of the most beautiful places in the world and perhaps the most beautiful place in Oregon.

Sorry I wasn’t meaning for it to be confusing. We are thinking about moving to Oregon and have begun researching. Time (along with a few more visits) will help narrow down the specifics.

Thanks for the feedback on Medford. We definitely have not decided on a place to move. Still lots of research and visiting to be done before committing. I’m pumped about the beautiful scenery that you talked about and Cape Perpetua/Yachats are going on the must-see list. PS. Medford may be a dump but you need a bullet proof vest to walk on the streets of Memphis. haha

FWIW, I lived in Medford almost 15 years, and cried when we moved away. I love it there, but it just got too big for us, among other things.

Thanks for the reply. We are definitely looking forward to Crater Lake. All the pictures that we have looked at are stunning so I can only imagine what it will be like in person. Also, glad to hear about the Oregon summer....We are expecting a high of 100 down here in Memphis, without the heat index

That's a northerly route; I usually take 99W to 18, which gets you to the coast at Lincoln City, just above Newport. This route takes you past the Evergreen Air & Space Museum & Waterpark and Spirit Mountain Casino, the state's largest.
