brookings oregon - dog friendly?
Hi everyone, we currently live in Southern Calif and can't wait to get out - too many rules, too many people and not enough places nearby to go hiking/swimming/hunting. Hubby is retiring from military and from what I gather we both like what we've read about Brookings - cool temps, fishing, trees, nice people. The big thing for us is dogs. We love dogs! And dogs, the way we care for them, require space - to run and have fun. As it is, all we've got is a vacant lot of eucalyptus trees, and lots of cemented sidewalks - can we say BO-RING - we have the beaches, but they're usually crowded with people. Would living in Brookings make them happy? If they'd be happy we'd be happy. thanks!

If you don't mind not having near as much shopping, it would be fine.
Brookings has far less tourist traffic than Cannon Beach or Seaside, Oregon.
So the beach gets visitors in summer, but its not packed.
I have a video online in an album that I took on the Monday after this last July 4th that will show it.
Many people take their dogs for walks to the beaches there.
You just can't take dogs into the California State redwoods park which is about 1/2 hour away.

mdvaden, don't think we'd miss shopping much - i'm a home body and my husband would probably be out exploring the great outdoors. as long as i've got internet access i should be fine. we're not moving right away, but we're keeping our eyes out for places to settle. thanks.

I lived in Whaleshead, which is 7 miles north of Brookings during middle school (2 years or so) and took the bus to get to school. I was 11/12 yrs old at the time and there are some fun touristy shops (usually only during busy tourist seasons), which I loved. Also, Brookings has changed since then, the movie theatre is a lot better I hear, they used to only have one (old) movie at a time...now they show popular/recent movies. I suggest looking at Whaleshead, OR. It is 7 miles north of Brookings and is technically an RV park, but the majority are log cabins that you can buy or rent. Take your dogs to Whaleshead beach (just across the street from the RV resort), there are very few people there and VERY dog friendly. There is also a creek at the bottom of the resort, so lots of dog-fun! I'm dog crazy too. How many do you have? You plan on buying, correct? Well minded dogs are especially welcome there. There is property all around in Brookings with good acerage, you just have to look along that main highway to find some.

I have friends who just built a new house in the hills above Whaleshead. I don't know how many lots are still available, but it seems to be a nice little rural development.

Hmm Whaleshead? I'll have to check it out - thanks! We have four large/med sized dogs - three are rescues. I've realized four dogs is our limit - physically and mentally We dream of a place that has a bit of acreage, NO LAWN and NO Home owners Associations. I understand the purpose of an HOA, and have never (yet anyways) had a problem with ours - there are good HOAs and bad ones - I'd rather not deal with them at all. Moving anywhere is probably at least three years away for us - but I know how fast time can fly. Just hope they'll still be some good places left when we get there. thanks!

I know someone that has a large piece of land for sale right near the ocean just on the outskirts of Brookings if you're interested.

I'm here in Brookings and it is great here. I'm up the hill and there has been blue sky for about 10 days, about 50 degrees. You can bring the dogs to the beach. It is a wonderful place. Fresh air, great nature, paradise. But there are lots of retierees, so I'm not staying, but it is a good place.

I'm not sure how dog friendly Brookings is, but the area is gorgeous! The only down side that I can see, is being so far from major shopping, such as department stores.

Dog friendly
I've been browsing info and have come across a doggie bakery that's in Brookings - now, that's gotta be a good sign! Also from what I've been seeing, Brookings reminds me of a place I lived a while back - Los Osos California. Always overcast, small population, lots of retirees, and had a beautiful coastal park - which unfortunately did NOT allow dogs, not even on leash. Los Osos is next to Morro Bay - a more well known tourist destination. Los Osos was and still is much quieter and doesn't have anywhere near (if any) the tourists that Morro Bay gets. Los Osos does have malls and big dept stores since there's the college population near by in San Luis Obispo. But that's not what gets me excited. I believe Brookings has the "nature element" both my husband and I crave. One of these days.. we will have to get up there and find out for ourselves - I don't think we will be disappointed.
