I have a master's degree with seven years experience in early childhood (prek-3rd grade) and thinking of relocating somewhere in Oregon, but not sure where yet. If you have any input I'd appreciate it

Recently there was an article in our local paper regarding more teacher layoffs and the outlook for teaching jobs in Oregon. If I can find it I will post the URL.

Unfortunately, with all the layoffs happening, I think that if and when rehiring takes place it will be amongst those who have been let go who will be the first called and new hirees will be at the bottom of the list.

I know Salem has to cut another $20M next year. Lake Oswego is closing schools as well. It is ugly for teachers in Oregon.

Back in 2009 Lake Oswego had a lottery to determine who would stay and who would go. Heckuva way to keep or lose a job.

It's really dismal. Don't move here in hopes of getting a teaching position. I wouldn't even move here thinking you can sub until you get a teaching position. I did that three years ago. I'm still subbing and rarely at that. I just heard here in Bend that many of the high school classes are pushing 50 students. More kids and less teachers...it's really sad.

If you already have a job, you should probably stay put. In some places, (not sure about OR, it may even vary by district), your past experience in other districts won't be considered when deciding who the get rid of at the end of the school year. Wherever you end up, you should make sure it's somewhere that your 7 years of experience matter when your job is on the chopping block.

Our district is North Clackamas (three high schools, four middle schools, & 16 elementary schools), and they went through a ridiculous bout of adding staff and opening new buildings in the Happy Valley area during the 1990-2000's population explosion. Unfortunately, that has come to a complete end.

They've laid of a number of teachers, and just got done shuttering two elementaries this summer. I'd expect more bad news to come.
