Nope, not nearly that expensive unless you want it to be. You CAN buy a home at SF Bay area prices, but the home will be MUCH larger than the home you'd get in the Bay area. Bend is more expensive than in the past, but it's less expensive than the DC Metro area, SoCal, Bay area and other big markets. It is more expensive than areas like Bentonville, Arkansas, though!

And Dave, I'd be completely bummed about not having that house! What a fantastic location!

Yes it was, and it was less than 150 yards to the baseball diamond at Harmon Park. I never did hit a home run into the river. Another big youthful disappointment. That house that's there now isn't the one I grew up in. The guy who built that place moved our house to NW 5th St. (or was it 6th...). That box of a house next to ours (if it's still there) was built after I left. It's too hard to return to Bend now. I would like to return to Oregon sometime, I just couldn't move back to Bend. Every year my family gets together in Ashland, and when I drive by the 97 turnoff in Weed I feel like I'm almost home again. Unfortunately with no more family in Bend I would just be returning to a town of ghosts and old memories. I'm sure the vast amount of Brooks-Scanlon land along the river has been sold for housing. I used to run the logging roads out there.

I will say that Central Oregon Community College is one of the most beautiful junior colleges I've ever seen!
