Wow. Talk about a slur from a by-gone generation...sounds like something my grandpa would have said! I guess if fits the vintage of the photo, though.

For lurkers who don't know the backstory, the "Oregon Cavemen" were a bit of local theater in Grants Pass back in the '40s and '50s that played off of the area's most famous attraction of the day -- the caverns east of Cave Junction.. The cavemen had a parade float and would jump off and "capture" women spectators from the sidelines as the float rolled by. Not exactly on par with the Elizabethan Theatre in Ashland, but...hey, it's at least a preliminary stab at arts and culture, even if a bit primitive.

It was joke, becase the Soviets actually did use photos of the Cavemen Booster Club during the Cold War as propaganda against the United States, showing their citizens how Americans "actually live" and how much ahead of us they were.

tribalrevival is on a distinguished road
this particular grants pass forum is interesting for us sociologists interested in the tree cutting vs the tree hugging culture wars anyway heres a quote from www.hippy.com/review-92.html

"My first experience on the west coast (I''m from Michigan) was a half hour from Grants Pass in a hippy commune in Selma in 1974. That was for a year. In 1986 I returned west to live and work in Ashland. I helped revive and speak monthly (1st Sunday) for the UU Fellowship meeting in the Art Museum on G St. So I''ve come to like Grants Pass and see it changing.

Default Hmmm... what, no brothas?

Hmmm... all this talk about diversity. Yet I didn't read one post by a black person stating how GRAND Grant's Pass is.

I'm a truck driver who lived in Portland for a couple of years in the mid-90s. All I heard was stories about the GP Klu Klux Klan.

That may be a thing of the past, but not the too distant pass. I believe that everyplace is an extension of it's past. e.g. San Francisco is still the Barbary Coast. Story goes that Oregon was largely settled by the Oklahoma people from the Dust Bowl and before that, folks from Missouri and Arkansas, while Washington State was chiefly settled by Scandinavians. Big difference.

Oregon was the last state to abolish "Sun Down Laws." (That's why most blacks in Portland still live near the Vancouver line or across it.) For those who don't know, "Sun Down Laws" (usually posted on a sign) read: "******, don't let the sun down catch you here.") In other words, blacks could work during the day, but they had to be out by night.

When will people learn that denial is no cure for the spiritual and psychological "diseases" that come out of hatred and intolerance? (And there are MANY dear Prozac Nation.) The Bible said, "Love they neighbor as you love thyself." That's marching orders.

Oh well ... I won't preach. Live and let live. I know what I've said is strong, but I don't see any thing that changes those assumptions. I could be wrong, but why aren't blacks running to this page to discount them?

Denial ... people who don't feel they are racist yet who feel secure by "not seeing" the thugs at work who ARE racist. Where there's smoke theirs fire. If you're white and small-minded, then I suppose GP is a really great choice for you. Go for it "TribalCat".

I visited Grants Pass this summer on a trip from the coast to Crater Lake. I was impressed with the scenery of the area. The town is surround by hills/mountains, up to about 4,000 feet, has the Rogue River, and is pine tree country. It would be great for outdoors activities although skiing is probably about 1.5 hrs away at Mt. Ashland. The drive from Grants Pass down to Crescent City, CA is outstanding.

Why are there no blacks living in Grants Pass? Actually, there are. I see them come into where I work and they live here happily. Why aren't there more? Well, why aren't there more in Maine or Vermont of New Hampshire? What about ANYWHERE in Washington for that matter? Idaho? Montana? Colorado? New Mexico? It's just not the way it was historically settled. There was never a large slave population like there was in the South. There was never anything like the factories in the Northern cities to draw large amounts of African-Americans to our areas.

Something I can say for sure though is:

Grants Pass is not a racist place.

Anyone who says otherwise is an idiot. I've lived here almost my whole life (though I am relatively well travelled), and I know it's not racist. My parents are a White/Mexican interracial couple and I have friends in this city of all races (black, Asian, Latino, Native American). My mom had two minor issues in the early 1980's. But otherwise? Me and my friends... No problems ever.

This is OREGON in the 21st Century. Mixed black/white couples live here and have NO PROBLEMS, no dirty looks, NOTHING. There are immigrants of all sorts in very small numbers and they are integrated into the community. There was a story on the front page of the Daily Courier about gay rights and featured a lesbian couple who said they walk around downtown holding hands on First Fridays and say they have never had any bad experiences. Heck, I have seen a gay male couple or two in my store where I work who were very obvious, and no one blinked an eye.

Are there racist, small-minded people in Grants Pass? Well, are there racist, small-minded people in San Francisco? In Berkeley? In Eugene, Boulder, Eureka, Seattle? Probably. They exist everywhere. No more here than any other modern, civilized place.

Public libraries closing does NOT reflect on the populace in the area. Fact is, OR politicians have never seen an entitlement program that they didn't jump in and implement and the govt IS going broke.
