Post News, Missing mushroom pickers found in Oregon

GOLD BEACH, Ore., Feb. 4 (UPI) -- Three mushroom pickers whose disappearance in an Oregon forest prompted a ground-and-air search were found alive Saturday, authorities said.

The Curry County Sheriff's Office said Belinda and Daniel Conne, both 47, and their 25-year-old son Michael, who have been living in an RV trailer while scoping out a place to live in Gold Beach, hadn't been seen since about noon Sunday at a Huntley Park campsite along the Rogue River.

I am relieved that they have been found and evidently little the worse for wear. I hope they know what mushrooms to pick as there are some troublesome types out there.

the article implies they could have survived for just a few more days. I guess it would be fairly easy to get lost. How frustrating that must have been for them. Just glad they're safe. I'm just now learning about mushrooms and recently found one at the upscale market similar to what they were seeking. The price at the market was 29 dollars per pound, so if you can find them growing wild that would be a worthwhile endeavor, but I would suggest taking a GPS with you.

...and a permit. Only thing about the GPS though, in that area, I've found that compasses and GPS's get 'confused' and twisted. Probably from all the ground minerals in the area.

So now, who pays for this Search and Rescue because I understand Curry County is bankrupt and Coos County is close behind. Will the family get a bill?

If I recall with similar efforts, the family will get billed. I don't know if it will be the whole amount or just a portion with the other part being written off as training.

Here's an idea....Maybe with the earnings from the Made-for-TV-Movie or Buy-My-Book, the Search and Rescue Agencies can recoup the financial loss.
