The redwood thread got me to thinking that nobody has mentioned the Valley of the Giants. Douglas fir doesn't live as long as spruce or redwood and doesn't get as large, but you can get a look at a real old growth coast range forest. It's west of Falls City. You can get there from Salem in a little over an hour. Maybe wait for the roads to dry out a little.

Larry,

Very cool post. Thank you! I will have to hike that when I get some time to myself. The place looks to be protected and hopefully will stand undisturbed for sometime.

The URL seems to be screwed up. Here's a different one.

The BLM will mail a brochure with driving directions. I should mention that, while it is not really remote, people probably will not have cell service and should be prepared to to take care of themselves.

The roads may not be in any condition to drive. We had flooding last week. You might want to wait until May.
