Hello,

My life plans have recently changed direction, so I decided it's finally time to start planning a move to the state I've always wanted to live in. I will be 19 when I move, so I have different needs than most other people I see asking this question.

Here are my priorities:
- I want to be very close to nature - preferably there would be wooded areas within walking distance.
- I don't want to live in a city as large as Portland, but I would like to be no more than a couple hours from Portland for shows and shopping, etc.
- I would also like to be no more than a few hours from the coast.
- Affordable cost of living for someone my age. (I currently live in Wyoming - high housing costs but cheap everything else. I make around $1500/month and live comfortably.
- Enough people my own age.
- It has to be someplace that still has local charm left, i.e. isn't overrun by chain stores and corporations. The more special the place feels, the better.
- Reasonable amount of stuff to do.

BONUSES:
- Good thrift stores.
- A college or university nearby.

I realize meeting all these criteria is unlikely, but I would like recommendations on the best fit.

Thanks in advance.

You just described Corvallis pretty much exactly. Hour from the coast, little under two from Portland, nature everywhere, can be pricey but you could get by on $1500/month (especially if you ditch your car and ride a bike instead). Very few chain stores (this is slowly changing, but local shops still dominate and downtown is lively). OSU is in town.

I'll jump in here before Steve does and tell you that you are describing Dallas.

I agree that Corvallis is the closest to your criteria, and you should also consider Eugene. I think those are the only two that are close.

Forest Grove is a possibility.
