You need to be a little more specific. There's a lot of difference between Carlton/Yamhill/Cherry Grove and Jewell/Vernonia/Mist.
The Jewell Wildlife Meadows are a favorite spot to watch Roosevelt Elk, the largest species of elk in North America. Logging is the primary industry. Carlton is more agricultural. The best farm ground is generally east of town, though there are some nice places to the west, just not so many. Huberd's Boot Grease is manufactured in Carlton, and Carlton Meat Packing is still in business, over on West Side Road. If you head west from Carlton, you go past the site of the old Meadow Lake Dam, which failed in the early 1960s. It caused quite a flood on the Nestucca River. |
