Default When did (or has) Anti-Californianism died out?

When I first came here in 2001, my parents talked about how Oregonians hate Californians. I was born in California, I can only remember like one time I've ever got any kind of flack for being from California.

I guess probably about 30 percent of the people in Oregon now are actually from California, maybe that's why you don't hear California hate as much, since most people here are actually from there originally or have a lot of friends who are?

Dunno... I've yet to hear of it outside of the rare joke.

I think that most of the Californians who moved up here have either adapted, or have moved back.

Oregon is where old Californians go to die. Most of the Californians who moved here in 2001 have died already, which opens up spaces for a new crop. They vote against schools, which keeps taxes down for the rest of us, but young people starting families are well advised to move to other, more family friendly states.

It's still alive and well in Bend, but it is Anti-SOUTHERN California sentiment.

As an east coast transplant myself.....I can sorta see why they're resentful.

Moderator cut: snip... anti-Californianism is extremely uncommon. People I went to high school with in the past decade joked about it in high school, but half of them were FROM California. Not sure when it "died" in the mainstream though.

When the number of Californians living here exceeded the number of Oregonians - no, actually I think as the housing costs shink in California, many may go back - mainly due to Oregon weather.

I was born in 1990 in San Francisco but I've lived here since 2001 and I like it better than California ... do you mind if I stay/consider myself more Oregonian than Californian? I prefer the weather too.

I tend to agree with this post. I think the mortgage piggybank syndrome has abated (for now) and there is not much cash to cut and run to Oregon on. Affordable housing and jobs in California would cause a reverse flow like you have never seen before. Oregon would match its pre 1970 self.

First, I really doubt the housing costs in the desirable parts of California will shrink enough for people to be able to afford to go back. Second, most Californians that move to Oregon do so because they love the Northwest and are so fed up with California for a number of reasons that they choose to leave the sunshiney Golden State behind.

My mom had a brief longing to move back to LA, when she and my dad retired, so that they could be closer to family, the beach, and the sunshine. But it's too expensive. And she loves her mountains and her forests and her small town, and many of her siblings have moved out of state to places they can actually afford to live in. And LA has changed so drastically since she lived there before. So much more traffic, more people, more crowded, though less smog, less open space, and the citrus groves are all gone. Not to mention the services cut, the perpetual budget crisis, the ridiculous taxes for everything, the dysfunctional government (though it is progressive when it can get anything done), and so forth...

My parents never felt any "anti-Californianism" when they moved to Southern Oregon from LA in 1981. And I'm pretty sure the area they moved to had very few people from outside the state. My mom did occasionally, though rarely, encounter some racism up until the early 1990s. But that's about it.

Depends on where you are and who you ask. Mostly the movement is not dead.
