Moving to Oregon (Portland, Eugene, Bend: low crime, good schools, living in)

We would love to move to Oregon, but we're having a hard time finding an area. We're looking for a small town, that has long, snowy winters, beautiful scenery(mainly trees), and is very peaceful. We live on the East Coast, and are tired to "city" life. We just had a son and low crime rates, as well as good schools are important to us as well. Any suggestions??

Joseph, near the Idaho border in the NE corner of the state. The scenery includes breathtaking views of the Wallowa Mountains, often referred to as "America's Alps", and convenient access to the Snake River Canyon, the deepest river gorge in North America. At its deepest it is over a mile vertically from the rim to the river. The town is an active artist's colony, with three bronze foundries in a small town. It's peaceful, beautiful and snowy. Educational opportunities go far beyond the school system.

People seem to like Bend. We didn't go up that far (we're in Ashland) because of those long, snowy winters you mentioned. Have a look online.

I am thinking of moving to Oregon...uncertain where. Eugene, or Portland. I have been living in New Mexico for years. Dry as hell! Any recommendations?

Hi - I moved here from Albuquerque, NM just a year ago. - i am originally from the NE.

Can you be more specific in what you are looking for?

and word to the wise, coming from New Mexico, with the gorgeous, go-on-forever blue skies, and 300 days of sunshine a year, be prepared for the long, grey winters here. No snow, but low, heavy cloud cover for about 7-8 months. I was only in NM for a short time, and I miss the sun alot!!!! (but thats about all I miss!)

Ahhh, I just noticed you are in Portland.

Southern Oregon doesn't have the never ending gray sky thing.

We have a perfect balance of 4 beautiful seasons.

Portland has more city like atmospheres, which apparently are really popular.

yes, the blue sky is ALL I will miss! (and good friends). I am really hoping that it is not as bad as it sounds (grey clouds aand darkness.....)

I do not know the area of Portland and would like input about areas to live.(ie, I would not recommend a newcomer to ABQ to move to warzone...or upper Central Ave., etc.)

I know the weather "changes" once you hit the Bend area-more sunny days. But where south does it change-Roseburg ? Sutherlin? Cottage Grove?? Thanks

Look into Klamath Falls. Not yet visited it (next on the list) but from what I understand you'll get the snow you're after but also the additional sun of southern Oregon. Bend is hopping and sunny but not the deep green forests.
