What kind of small town is Sisters?
We're interesting in relocating to Bend, but wanted to take a good look at the small town of Sisters before we make a final decision. I've heard the schools are a little better in Sisters. Is it just a tourist town with not much else to offer locals?

A very touristy, vacation-y place. Yes, it's very cute, it has a bunch of fun little shops, but in the summer it's got gridlocked traffic and way too many tourists. It's in beautiful country - it might not be so bad living outside of town somewhere but weekends and summer would drive me nuts. Black Butte Ranch, a huge vacation resort (mostly, though there are year-round residents as well) is just outside of town. There's a great music festival, an arts festival and a bunch of other stuff, too.

Sisters has about 1800 people and is primarily a tourist town with an Old West motif. It has an industrial park with companies that provide scores of jobs. The biggest thing is that Sisters is VERY expensive. It's pricier than Bend so you'd probably want to check it out.
Personally, I LOVE Sisters and would move there in a heartbeat if I could. The scenery and setting in Sisters is exquisite. I would say the schools probably are better as that's generally the case in small towns.

It really does need a highway bypass. Things clog up there quite badly on warm summer days, as others have mentioned.

crowded in the summer, beautiful year round....nearby Clear Lake is a MUST SEE...we used to camp there all the time in the summer. Its an incredible, undescribable lake. And we always love to take a day to go into Sisters. Ive never lived there though, so i can only pass on my impressions of it when ive visited. Seems quite clean and friendly. Might be worth your while to take a day or two and go talk to the locals and walk about.
best of luck to you,
Tiffany

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, we are planning a weekend visit in mid-October to check it out. Thanks again!

(Watch it on the Oregon Road Web Cams, especially on the weekends, just to watch road traffic and snow conditions.)
