Default Wife Offered a Job in Salem

Well the wife is offered a job in Salem so it looks like we'll be moving from Wi to Oregon. Now we have both lived in other states. (Just not together. ) So living in another state isn't that big of a deal. What will be a change is making new friends, especially like the ones we have now.

Been doing alot of looking around online for homes. Not really sure we want to live "right" in Salem. I've been looking around at areas close by, like Silverton, Lyons, Mt. Angel, places like that.

Here in Wi. we both love to ride our motorcycles and ride our ATV's. I'd imagine that with the varitey of area in Oregon it would be a wonderful state to ride the bikes in. ATV's on the other hand worry me a little. For me personally I love to ride in the wooded areas and if there is a mud hole I'm there. I've done a little searching on the atv trails and found some that would seem like nice riding. Just hoping that there are some mud holes on the trails that I did look at or read about.

I know living here in Wi (small town) is pretty laid back. We don't lock the house when we leave. (Close knit neighborhood) I'm guessing that is won't be quite the same out there, but I can live with that.

So just wondering if anyone might give me/us a little insight on what to expect.

Thanks for the responses ahead of time.

I wouldnt suggest living right in Salem, ATV's are cool, but sometimes can be hard to find good trails that arent over ridin. Look to the outskirts of Salem for living. Good Luck. Mt. Angel is probably right up your alley.

- if you enjoy the sand, we have massive sand dunes that people come from all over to go riding on over here along the coast. - in fact, dunefest was just a few weeks ago and brought thousands here. - my brother comes here from just outside Portland, usually every other weekend, and spends the weekend on the dunes riding -- there is also a very popular place called Browns camp that everyone takes their ATVs to. - I cant for the life of me remember exactly where it is, but not too far from Forest Grove/Hillsboro - ask locals around there, most will know. -- also, dependin on exactly where youre at, not everyone locks doors. We lived about 35 min. out of Salem and were so far out, we didnt lock our doors - of course, the neighbor w/Alzhimers wandered in and raided the fridge or took a nap in one of our beds, so there was that! lol - its all gonna depend on how much youre willing to commute.
Good luck!!!

Welcome to Oregon!!

I live in Salem. I would suggest Silverton, it's a very quaint community, very much a boutique community. However, it's getting very pricey. Lyons might be nice, very small and in the Santiam Valley where you'd probably find more places for ATV. The coast is great for that, too, as is Central Oregon.

This is going to sound tacky, but if you need help finding a home, I work in a relocation company and can help with everything including lodging, rental cars. Am I shameless or what?? lol

We found a great DVD that shows where most ATV riding areas are at in Oregon. See Oregon ATV trails at WWW.ATVtrails.us

Portlanders, and other non-salem residents, see Salem residents as "white trash" and "tweakers", so I would not recommend living in Salem. Check out Silverton. It is a nice small town.

Ummm........ wow. White Trash? Guess won't be the first time I've been called that, along with biker trash, and several others choice words.

Not to be rude and I thank you for the info, but if where I live dictates my social status and if I worried about that, then I would be a pretty shallow and thin skinned person.

Besides the wife is only going to work in Dallas, we will be more than likely living in Falls City. So I guess the redneck, hillbilly in me can really come out.

I did mention to the realator about property in Silverton, and from what he explained, its way over priced for what you get. I'll be happy living in Falls City. Besides I get along with all folks. Don't care what their label is.

People who live in Vancouver, WA are also thought of in the same way. I am not calling people names, or trying to say that Portlanders are better, just letting you know how it is. Better to hear the good and bad of an area. And watch out for those tweakers!!!! You do know what a tweaker is, don't you? You will hear that term a lot here with the big meth problem.

If you want an awsome Oregon Coast experience, get a room for the weekend at the Inn at Spanish Head in Lincoln City. Built into a cliff with the first floor on the beach. Get 2nd floor or above, though. Great place to storm watch.

Welcome to Oregon!!!

Sorry if I sounded rude. I wasn't trying to be. Thanks for the heads up though, really. No I didn't know what tweakers were. We just ususally call them meth-heads here. From what I've learned about life no matter where you go, there will be that problem.

Will check out the coast. Always been fond of the ocean.
