You have to ask yourself if jimg1126 has nothing positive at all to say about Oregon, just why the heck is he still here? According to a post on another thread, he claims to be 41, rich and retired. So why doesn't he pack up his negative attitudes in his Louis Vuitton suitcase and go somewhere else where they will appreciate his depressive negativity (maybe Iran or France...)?

Thanks for the suggestion!
Unfortunately, because we are trying to stay away from crime ridden California, Myrtle Creek won't work for my family. But it sounds and looks b-e-a-utiful

Consider Central Oregon
I've grown up in Oregon and have lived along the Columbia Gorge, along the I-5 corridor, on the coast and now in central Oregon.
For what you're looking for I'd consider the Bend area. The is Central Oregon Comm. Coll, and they have a branch off the university. Bend has the lowest unemployment rate around and the whole area is a "high energy" type of place. Great shopping...a new mall village area, downtown shops, and the old mill site has been converted into shops and restaurants called now..."The Old Mill District". I love this area!
For schools and if you want to be about 20 minutes from Bend...go to Sisters. Has the best schools around and a small town with nice homes, almost no crime, and the whole town supports the arts, music and sports progams. It's a western theme town that hosts the largest outdoor quilt show in the world. Check it out online. Let me know if you want more info. There's some great properties available now.....new homes with the builders paying all closing costs....or, homes in communities with pools, club houses, etc. I'd be happy to help you. Linda

Just couldn't resist answering this one. We relocated from Dyer, Indiana 30 years ago and have never regretted it for even one day. We have not used a snow shovel since we left Indiana, though we have had 2 storms in 30 years that did not melt within a few hours. If we want to get to the snow we can but we don't often have to drive in it. Fog is the thing we deal with most of the time here.
Compared to living in NW Indiana, this is heaven. I worked in Chicago and can still remember -65 wind chill. No thanks.
Most of your utilities are cheaper here, no sales tax, no self-serve gas, but other things are more expensive, such as food, though at certain times of year we get a lot of local produce and fruit.
Home prices are out of sight. If you own a home you will probably still pay more here for less square footage. I would not trade our little piece of property for the nice home we had in Indiana with neighbors an arm's reach away. There are RR tracks here but probably not as many in the whole state as there are in NW Indiana.
I could go on, but I am sure by now you know we love it here.

In the interest of full disclosure I no longer live in oregon but have made a break for it looking for a more simple life, Please remember that all states have problems, you can not get a more beautiful place to live than oregon but that beauty comes with a big price tag, and schools and infrastructure that may not be in place, i have a relative in bend and they actually have a RUSH hour now, unbelievable, I grew up on the coast and now there are condos built on the old fish canneries, well progress, that is how it goes

Little peg, what was it like living on the coast?
Does it flood?
How are the homes?
Colleges?
