Hello all,

Thank you in advance for any info any of you can provide. I am a 51 yr old female who may have an opportunity to move to either Tillamook or Newport. I am looking for a town that has a few good restaurants, maybe a coffee shop, a good library and has access to good walking......both in town and along the beach. Access to any music or entertainment is an added plus.

I also like to hike and kayak...it looks like most of the Oregon Coast is good for both of these activities. If any of you were to choose between the two towns, which would you? Any info on both of them, both good and bad would be appreciated.

Thank you!

Tillamook is about ten miles from the beach FYI.

For your needs, I think Newport would be just slightly better. Tillamook is more of a working town then a tourist town.

Newport. Everything is closer together. It's also a town than really supports the arts.

I agree, Newport. Tillamook's catch phrase is "Cheese, trees and ocean breeze". The ocean is too far so that it's not strong enough to always cover the cheese source breeze.

Thank you all for your kind replies. I really appreciate it.

Blazer Prophet, when you say the arts, does this include music also? I saw that Newport has a concert hall.....do they occassionally bring in music?

Is there good hiking trails and kayaking around Newport? If you were to pick a neighborhood to rent a modest house, that would be close to downtown, does anyone have any suggestions? A place walkable to the library and coffee shop?

Any and all good outdoor activities, I would to hear about.

Thank you!

Start looking for a rental house Sept-October and sign a one year lease.

Newport is a small community, finding a residential rental will be a catch-as-catch-can proposition. You really need to go there and explore. What you see on Craigslist is 99% vacation rentals.

My father lived near Waldport. On our way to visit him, we'd sometimes stop in Newport. I think it'd be a cool area to live in.

Which town has better medical facilities?
Newport would be my choice but it is good to know what the local health-care scene is.

If I were to choose, and have been to both places (more then a few times ha), I would choose Newport.
Newport is a special place. Sure Tillamook has some things, but Newport is a spot I have always said was one of my favorites over the mountain. Lived in Cannon beach and it was fine and dandy and all.... but Newport :0)

Is there a way you can visit, and choose for yourself??

We've looked into moving to Newport after a number of visits there. It's a cool town with some great restaurants, Local Ocean's bayfront location being one of our favorites. I understand that winter's can bring some wicked storms with very high winds. We've only visited in June-August.
