Default Salem

Is Salem a nice place to live? Safe? Fun? Hubby is looking at jobs there. Right now its between Salem, Yakima or Spokane. I think Salem is the best choice, what do you think? We are looking for a safe environment to raise a family, that's our number one priority.

It's all going to depend on what you like best. Salem will be a little warmer and wetter than your other choices. You may want to use the city-data city pages to look them all up and compare. Oh,and Salem is the capitol city of Oregon!

As far as jobs go, Salem probably has a larger selection. I lived in Yakima many years ago when I was a kid and have been there several times. I prefer Salem to Yakima because Salem is only 40 miles south of Portland, and Yakima is in the middle of the desert. The climates are definitely different Western Oregon is more rainy/wet than Yakima and Spokane on the Eastern side of Washington State. I have never been to Spokane so I can't give you any input on that. I do know that it is north east Washington just across the border from Cour D'Alene, Idaho, all the way across the state from Seattle. So, it depends on whether you want to be close to a major metropolitan area (like Portland) and whether you like dry, desert weather or if you don't mind a more wet climate. It does rain a lot here, but it's not downpours every time it rains, a lot of the time it's showers. It does get gray and gloomy in the winter, but we usually get very little snow. I used to live in Eastern Oregon in a drier climate and I had no problem adjusting to the rainy and wet weather here. The summers here are nice, and temps usually don't get up over 100 degrees like the eastern side of the state. This summer was an unusually cold one ( a lot more 60 degree days than normal) so don't judge it by this year's weather.

Thanks so much! I appreciate all your input! I'm not thrilled about Yakima so I hope that doesn't work out. Salem seems neat.

I've been to Yakima and I found it to be a gross, dusty farm town. Spokane was better but I didn't care for it.
