Coos Bay/North Bend
Me and my wife are thinking of getting out of Crazyfornia . Looking at Coos Bay/North Bend as a possibility. I am 31 years old and she is 28. We want a nice place to start a family. Thinking of coming up for a visit in January. We are thinking Jan. to get a feel for the most extreme of your weather. Any input would be great!!!

depends on what youre looking for. There are some grand old houses, tons of charm and beauty that are from the turn of the century. Plenty of new modern homes going up too if thats what youre looking for. If you can swing it, theres homes on the beach, and homes w/breathtaking views...pastureland, wetlands, on the bay, or off the dunes. Id avoid anything on floodlands for obvious reasons. lol How much can you swing for a home?
I hear the hospital is wonderful to work for, and that ACS hires like mad, but doesnt promote or give raises. What kinda job are you searching for?

If you come for a visit in Jan. you'll be likely to get some rain. The rain has started early and it's been raining today. It's not so bad that you can go out to the store or work. It is just rain that stops and starts during the day.
Sometime the Casino hires people. They've been adding on to the place, and now it looks huge.If you move here you'll just have to see who is hiring at that time. Sometimes grocery stores, mini markets, and resturuants are hiring. If nothing else you can drive around and look for help wanted signs or sign up at a temp agency.

We were thinking a fairly new house with a couple acres. Still researching the area. My wife has a college degree so she will not have a problem finding work. As for me, that will be interesting.
How are the gas prices?

hummmmmmm....Im pretty sure theres gotta be some around. Possibly more into Coquille..Id call a local real estate and have em send you some of the real estate books that have all the houses/land for sale in the area. We poured over those things when we moved! I still do sometimes. lol
too bad it has to be new, my boss is selling his house w/2 acres, just out of town, real nice lot, even has a tree house and a chicken coop. lol but the house isnt new.
look into the oregon employment page too, theres a section on coos bay/north bend you can keep an eye on jobs at. Also , the local paper is at TheWorldlink.net and sometimes the Southcoastshopper.com has got listings for jobs/houses/land.
ya oughta try and make it in time for the Shore Acres lights show. Its very cool!
Best of luck!

Thanks for all the info. Gas prices? Is there a certain time of the year better than others to ride the dunes? How about a good Hotel in Coos Bay?

Gas rates from 2.50 to 2.97 right now. Safeway card drops the price some compared to others. It goes up and down so much lately you can't keep up.
Good hotel, depends on what you want.. weight room, pool or you don't care? Best western or red lion is good.
Dunes, depends on if you care if you get rained on or not. Any time is good is what my son will tell you, I would say summer so depends on what you prefer.
Now for housing with acres, I agree with the Coquille or Myrtle Point area. I l ive in Myrtle Point. Good areas here to raise kids and not as $$ for housing but you have to commute if you get a job in CB/NB area.
Jobs- again varies, anything from pumping gas to executive. Fred Meyer hires often, as does Ross, Casino, the temp agencies which there is like what 4 now I think.
You can also look at the south coast shopper and get pricing jobs etc besides the world newspaper. In coquille it is the sentinal and in myrtle point the paper is the herald.

Thanks SweeterSix, good info. Still planning on a Jan. visit but no date set as of now. Does anybody know about the Bureau of Land Managment? Hard to get into?
