Hello,

My family and I will be moving to the Pacific NW, and we're really liking coastal OR. Thought about Northern California, but my husband was kind of concerned about COL being higher in CA.

Does anyone here live in or near Gold Beach or Harbor? Any information you could give me (good AND bad) would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

ETA: Are there hospitals/doctors offices in those particular cities, or do you have to travel for medical care?

Harbor is not a city; it's a CDP in unincorporated Curry County. There is a small hospital in GB and there is a new medical center in Brookings. Be aware that the Oregon coast -- and the southern coast in particular -- are very much retirement areas and the amenities you'll find there will reflect that. Curry County is also failing fiscally and may go bankrupt in the next year or two.

Thank you Steve...I did not realize it wasn't a city. It was listed in cities, lol. We live in Louisiana, I'm going to have to look up what CDP is as I've never heard of it. What happens when a county goes bankrupt? I'm afraid that doesn't sound too promising. Although a lot can change before we actually do move, it will be about 4 years. I'm just trying to find out as much as I can before hand...you can never gather too much information!

Curry County is almost a 100% guarantee that it will be the first county in Oregon to go bankrupt. Medical, even getting a family doctor, is very poor in the area. The nearest full hospital in Coos Bay and there are no doctors taking new patiants. If medical is a concern do not consider Gold Beach.

Wow, thank you sirs for the information!

We are a healthy bunch, but I definitely want healthcare to be easily accessible. That sounds like not such a good spot to go.

As locals, what county/area would you reccomend to a family? Our 2 older children will be in college, probably here in La. & our youngest is homeschooled, so public school districts aren't important to us.

Thank you again for your help. Google is great, but IMO the best information comes from the people who are actually there, kwim? Have a nice day.

The real question is what do you do for a living, and where can you get a job? Unless you are wealthy and self supporting, you can not just throw a dart at a map and move there.

Well, this is the problem. Many people HAVE done this either in other parts of the country or in previous decades when they were young and footloose. They figure "well, I'm flexible; I can get a job practically ANYWHERE" and don't realize that things are different in small towns in the coastal retirement belt in the 21st century. Additionally, I've seen many people who came to the coast to fill a job vacancy and had to move when that job ended -- uprooting their lives and having to sell their homes at a loss. If you lose your employment, chances are there won't be any Plan B employer in town to whom you can turn as you would in a larger city. If your job ends, you'll be SOL unless you're prepared to be self-employed. Decent jobs on the coast are very few and far between. That's why it's mostly people who grew up there and those over 70 who live on the Oregon coast.

Well, as much as I'd like to be, I'm not exactly wealthy. But we live comfortably & have a decent savings. I'm a nurse, and quite flexible in regards to what type of setting I work in (hospitals, offices, nursing homes, home health, etc.).

I realize I can't just "throw a dart", and that's not what I'm doing. We like the PNW area, which is why I'm looking in OR. And, as I said previously, it will be a few years before we do actually move, which is why I'm researching now. I really like coastal areas, but if it turns out that there isn't much in the way of employment, well then I guess we'll end up further inland.

I'm too much of a planner, there's no way I could just pick up & move without doing my homework! LoL

Good for you. The medical on the coast is limited, but the jobs are one of the few in demand. Coos Bay just added on and were looking for nurses.
