How small is small to you? Tillamook is a decent sized community for the Oregon coast. Lots and lots of dairy farming going on there. You can smell Tillamook quite aways out coming in from the east (from Portland). Tillamook was a sleepy town on the coast when I was a kid. Its a lot more reliant on tourism now. You don't have to dodge log trucks anymore. Great fishing in the rivers nearby. The Trask, Wilson, and Nestucca rivers in particular. I am not sure of the employment situation in Tillamook. I would consider it as a retirement option as it isn't directly on the sea shore and has a pretty direct route to Portland. I cant say much about Nehalem. Its between Wheeler and Manzanita on 101. Its at the top of Nehalem bay. Peeked at google earth to refresh my memory and it sits on the edge of a fairly wide "flat" valley that winds up the Nehalem river. Pretty much all in agriculture. Highway 53 goes up that valley to Highway 26 and if i remember right it isnt even paved the whole distance but a pretty drive.

Isn't the stretch of Hiway 101 around Tillamook where people put fresh flowers (Dahlias) out for sale on little roadside tables on the Honor System where you take the flowers you want and leave money in the jar? I had never seen that before and found that so refreshing.

Default Nehalem

Nehalem is a very small town on the Oregon coast. We own property 1 mile North of Nehalem in the Manzanita urban growth boundry we are going to sell. We have 4.5 acres in the woods with a 2 bedroom beach cabin. Nehalem & Manzanita are both tourist attractions so in the summer it is very busy but gets calm and quiet during the rest of the year. The road is Highway 101 and there is a completely paved back road to shortcut to Highway 26 if you want to go to Portland, 100 miles away. Manzanita is on the beach and so very beautiful. There is a lot of surfing, windsurfing and just walking on the beach. For whatever reason the weather is better here than even 20 miles up or down the coast. We are in a sunbelt. I have been told it is Neahkahnie Mountain that causes us to have less wind and rain.
