That's what I would do.

Have several possible routes (easy to do with Google Maps). Have the fastest/shortest route be the first choice. If the first choice has dangerous weather, go to second choice, and so on.

Chances are the first choice will be ok.

In the winter between Texas and Oregon I too would go the southern route.
