Years ago we lived in the Monterey, CA area. They have many foggy, rainy, windy days. I've noticed on weather reports, days there it's colder then it is here.

Monterey also has nice weather days. It's a beautiful area.

There is gray fog and rain all down the California coast until you reach Los Angeles. However, if you go down I-5, it pretty much stops about Redding. The Central Valley of California gets some killer fogs in the winter, but it is nothing like the rain and fog of the coast, and there is not a lot of rain.

To the east of the Cascades and the Sierras, there isn't much rain.

About 6 months out of the year, Oregon's west side gets a lot less sunshine than just about anywhere east of the Cascades ... including all the way to the east coast. Those of you who say it's not that gray, probably haven't lived anywhere that gets an "average" amount of sunshine ... my 2 cents.

That's basically correct. It's not just a matter of north/south, but also distance from the coast. So the critical gloom line could be as far south as San Luis Obispo, CA or as far north as Bend, OR. The farther north you go, the more inland you have to be to escape pervasive gray skies.

Along the I-5 corridor, the proportion of sun to clouds increases gradually until you drop into the northern Sacramento Valley. Once you hit Redding there's a quantum leap in sunniness.
