An hour from portland can mean different things depending on what time of the day it is (rush hour or not) and what area you're coming from and where in Portland you're going (what traffic spots you hit). A 3bd/2ba 1800sqft house for 300k or less and lots of trees qualifies pretty much every small town in Western OR.

Mulino, out of Oregon City....we used to live out there, just beautiful, and backed to forestry land, so we were on an 80acre piece, backing to hundreds of foresty acres. Used to wake up to deer, bunnies, raccoons, cougar, coyote, and an occasional bear out there! ummm, i'll second the Vernonia. BIL lives out there, very pretty area, nice little town. ummmm Estacada maybe, parts of Sandy. That oughta give you a few ideas to start searching for properties in.
