Default Taxing Authorities in Yamhill County

I am trying to do a resonably accurate assessment of how much more we will have to pay in taxes when we move from Texas to Oregon. Is there anyone here who can tell me the taxing authorities in Yamhill County, McMinnville specifically? I am having a hard time calculating the property taxes except that I see Oregon doesn't grant homestead exemptions to homeowners and only give seniors a "deferral" on taxes, not a further reduction. Can anyone help me?

We're possibly moving to Oregon from TX too and would like to buy a house. I'm curious as to whether not being able to claim homestead means the taxes are going to be too much to handle for us. We'll be looking for a house in the $200,000 range near Eugene most likely.

I don't think you will have a problem finding a house in your price range in the Eugene area. The futher from Portland, the less the houses cost although it spikes in the Corvallis area which would be north of where you're looking. But you're correct, the taxes are something to seriously consider. Having that homestead exemption is a nice break here in Texas although the property taxes are still pretty hefty. If you want to see a comparison, go to this site: Taxes by State although it doesn't break down the taxing authorities enough, which is what prompted my question here.

Thanks for the info! I haven't owned a home in quite a while and when I did in MI 6 yrs ago the taxes were included in my mortgage payment, so I'm not real sure what would be outrageous and what would be reasonable.

Property taxes in Oregon vary widely by local jurisdiction. There are several different taxing districts that collect property taxes, including the school district, county or city government, fire department, and special taxing districts. Bonded indebtedness can spread across city or county boundaries. I think McMinnville is building a new high school, so property taxes may be going up a bit there.

Your best bet would be to call the county assessor's office and ask what the taxation rates are in your proposed neighborhood. Any time you are house hunting, you have to check the taxes on that specific residence.
