Pretty general, but my canned answer is the Rogue Valley is the best for family and weather and nice people.

There are many great places to live in Oregon. I'm not a doctor, but I would think you would want to be near a larger urban area for dealing with a blood disorder. I don't know if it's an adult or child with the disorder, but Doernbecher's is a phenominal children's hospital in Portland, and St. Vincent's is excellet as well. I would think you would have to call to find out if they specialize in blood disorders.
I don't know of anywhere in Oregon that isn't great to raise children. I think it is a pretty family oriented state. What will drive your relocation will be cost of living. Portland is much more expensive than Salem (where I am located). So it kind of depends on what you can afford.

I'm in the same boat as far as having health probs and relocation...one of the things I've found out is use your current Doc. Have them look and communicate with potential Docs in the areas you might be interested in.
Mine have and it was an eye opener...I've now got plenty of places to choose from and know that I can get the health care I need.

To RENT or SELL? How long is the wait?
We are being relocated this month to South Carolina. We'd like to keep our house and rent it, but we are worried it will sit empty for too long. Its across from Nike) Perhaps we should sell. my questions are... anyone selling or sold their home.. how long did it sit? and If your renting your home how long until it was rented?

hi
Hi there,
From your name, I'd suspect you're from Louisiana. I moved from Louisiana to Oregon 17 years ago. We recently moved away from Oregon to Michigan a little over a year ago.
I love Oregon. I also used to work at the major hospital in Medford. I can tell you that it's a great hospital, but if you have a really rare blood disorder, I'd urge you to be close to Portland. They do have some great hospitals, as well as a really good medical school (OHSU). I have friends from Medford who've had to drive to and from Portland for medical care, and it's not fun at all. Many people have to do this. I have a few friends who go to San Fransico and Seattle too for medical care. They're both bigger than Portland.
That being said, if you do choose to be near Portland, I'd suggest trying to live in Washignton state (across the river). The schools in Oregon have been deteriorating for many years, and are now about as bad as schools were in Louisiana when I left in the early '90's. They used to be excellent, but not anymore. Plus if you live in WA near Portland, you pay lower income taxes, and can still shop tax free in Oregon (no sales tax, but high income tax).
Also, the cost of living there is part of what drove us out. It's very expensive to buy a house there. Medical care was much more expensive there than in Louisiana or Michigan. Make sure your insurance has providers there. It seems like Oregon isn't as well covered as many states. Don't know why, but it may be due to the unique state medical health care system there. If you qualify for that it's great, but if not, it's hard sometimes to get care. At least it was in the Rogue Valley. My personal "take" on medical situation in Medford was that many docs were either fresh out of med school, or came there to retire. The ones that were there to retire didn't want to take call, have big case loads, and were downsizing, as the community was increasing dramatically. I'd suspect that Portland is a bit better, but I'd ask around to make sure.
Good luck from another native Louisanaian. I never regretted my decision to move to Oregon. I miss it a lot, and hope to move back some day when my kids are older and we can have the 2 full time jobs it takes to live there or in the PNW.
