Be very prepared for nonstop, 24-hour, hard-pounding rain and wind for about 4 months in the Newport area. I would also encourage you to do some research on jobs there. It is a very small town with limited opportunity. In the summer, it is a great little place to hang out. I would encourage you to seek further south for better weather and better job opportunities.

Speaking of the southwest coast, live over a few mountains inland, have less wind & rain...

Hawk is right, the weather's better and real estate tends to be less expensive when you get a little ways inland from the coast.

Newport is small compared to Portland, but it's the largest town on the coast between Astoria and Coos Bay.

Personally, I liked Florence over Lincoln City and Newport but that's just my preference.
What finally got to me was all the rain and cloudy skies.

Newport is so well positioned. It seems to be calmer than Lincoln City and not as many continuous retiree vistors clogging it like Florence. It has a little medical center, a Walmart for cheap food, wonderful beaches and a better sense of the arts.

If I were to pick another locale, it would be Brookings. Isolated from a lot of tourism, excellent weather, and the Redwoods are just south.
This is what I'm hoping. The extreme SW coast has better weather than the rest of coastal Oregon then? Is there a consensus of that. I don't like extreme hot or cold (which seems to be most of what we get back east) but I'm leery of the rainy&stormy thing I keep hearing about Oregon. I'll visit at some point but a short visit won't prove much about the weather. I do use my weather.com app though

Ah, thank all of you for taking the time.
I think we narrowed down to Devil's Lake in Lincoln City or Depoe Bay.
Depoe Bay is winning as the tourism would kill us. We have had it with it where we currently live. Californians(no offense intended) are destroying our small towns.
I will say the Realtors in Depoe and the surrounding areas are terrible. We have yet to find one that responds more than once via email and that once is to tell us how great they are.
We drove 10 hours to just look at the town options and stopped in a Real Estate office. We let her, Principle Broker, know our intentions and simple wants. Finished the conversation by telling her we are cash buyers up to 400k and still haven't heard from her yet, 10 days. Not even a "Thanks for stopping in, we don't need your easy money".
Quite disappointing.
Anyway, we are prepared for the weather as well as the job market.
I appreciate all the responses and will still look forward to other ideas.
Looking into Florence now

That's because if you are looking at Depoe Bay, there are no properties that would fit your needs or means.

You do realize that Depoe Bay's tourism is much worse then that in Lincoln City? Depoe Bay is stuck on 101 between Newport and Lincoln City. In the summer months it can get backed up pretty bad in town because there is only one road, and it has parking along it!

At least in Lincoln City you can bypass a large portion of the traffic if you know the back roads.

If you want to get away from "tourists", moving to the Oregon Coast is the exact opposite of what you should do.
