You're welcome. Hummmm...late jan eh? You'll be coming around the time when our weather is at its worst! Go figure. lol Do you know where you'll be staying? What kind of places are you looking at? Too bad you'll miss the light show at Shore Acres, (or the gardens in full bloom) but you should still go there if you get a chance and do some wave watching, if its too wet/cold, theres an enclosed observitory that is pretty neat and has awesome views. I wouldnt plan in spending a day going through the mall. Its pretty small!! It was quite a shock for me the first time I saw it!!! lol But it does have some nice stores. Do you like seafood? Theres a couple places off the tourist strip to get some really really good crab! Sadly, my favorite place shut down...sob... now I have to find a new place to get fresh tuna for a good price (any ideas Waterlily??) but i did find an excellent place on the docks for great crab!! Super friendly people there that Ive met, and they give you a deal! I'll never never eat another store bought crab again! lol
Hey, PM me if you want, Id love to be of any help.
best of luck!
Tiffany

Once again thank you. What's the average monthly electric bill cost? High car insurance? Trying to figure out what bills are like in your area. Oh, just curious if there is a National Guard station near Coos Bay?

I suppose it just depends what age you are and what kind of lifestyle you want. It is too bad it doesn't attract the younger college educated career minded creative type crowd as those are who will be boosting the economy and creating more cultural institutions. It is great for retirees who want a (relatively) cheap home on a beautiful coastline that they will never leave or join the workforce.
I do have hope for the place though, as it has a lot of similar characteristics of Bend- world class golf, beautiful scenery, outdoor enthusiasts dream, more than just tourism-based economy( not much), remote of the willamette valley. It is getting better....slowly. Maybe they should expand the college or do something to attract more artists. Ashland is similar in size but has it more together.

I was born and raised in Coos Bay, OR. Yes, it gets gray in the winter..Rain is the middle name. But I grew up happy and healthy. People do tend to stick to themselves, but is that so different from the way society is going today, anywhere? Our family had threee kids, mom and dad...Our friends were in our "out of town" neighborhood. No paved roads and if we had problems or someone was ill, our friends came to help out. We took care of each other. I doubt if you will find to many loggers running around there now. Environs have taken care of that way of life and closed may operations. Fishermen are some of the firendliest people around. They love what they do and love selling it to you. There isn't anyway you can pick out a place to live without spending some time, good weather or bad, and checking it out. I, or others, may have biases depending upon negative events that we have experienced, that should not influence what you do. Anyplace takes some flexibility and time to fit into. How much give and take are you willing to handle? Yes, there are some"old" folks who sort of run things, but you might want to move there because of what they "have" created and held sacred for so long. that is not a bad thing. There is always someone younger, with new ideas, who comes along and helps to change things ever so llittle. That is how it goes. Coos Bay is so different today that it was when I was growing up there. Do I hate the changes, no. Would I want it to be exactly the same, no. the changes you see have taken so long to happen that noone noticed. Take a risk..

Coos Bay
I have lots of friends and some family left in Coos Bay. It was not a negative response, only a response to let others know it is something you have to decide for yourself, no matter where you choose to live. It was a wonderful life for me, being in Coos Bay, and it could be for others. We visit as often as we are able.

Tiffela,
Is that just electric lights or does it include electric heat? What does your heat bill run and what kind is it?

we have a pellet stove, so we've never used the heaters in our house.....so for heating, lets see, our pellets are about 4.00bag, we usual take about 2days per bag....depending on the weather...
so thats lights, 4 computers, 6 fishtanks, 3 tvs, and various other appliances...
