Bend always reminds me of Palmdale in the Mojave Desert.

Just judging by photos, the geology in the high desert looks different. The high deserts of the Southwest have more layered sedimentary rocks or beige kaibab and red ironstone, more brittle rocks, sandstone, and sandy surfaces. The Northwestern deserts seem to have a darker shade of rocks (perhaps because of more recent volcanic activity and it looks like it has more vegetation (even dormant species). It does have a beauty all its own though and it definitely is different though in subtle ways I suppose.

It's true that most of the Oregon desert is rimrock covered by Columbia Basalt and volcanic ash, but there are exceptions.
