I need to drive from Grants Pass to Portland in an older car and need to avoid the mountain summits. Do you know if 97 or even the coast would allow for a pretty flat drive? Thank you!

No. Either way you have to go over summits to get to either US 97 or US 101, so no avoiding it. You might as well take I-5.

Get the car fixed. There is no reason an older car in good shape shouldn't make the summits. If you're worried about it just take I-5 and make sure you stay with the trucks in the right hand lane.

If it can not make the summits, it should not be on the road. I-5 is the flattest. The other two routes are much more up and down, not to mention more than 200 miles out of the way..

Radiator and hoses or belts tend to be the biggest cause of roadside failure in older cars. Wheel bearings and transmission next. Tire failures are common.
