The weather has changed quite a bit since that time of 78-87 and Roseburg is definitely hot and over 100 but not as hot as Medford.

That's the spirit! Just don't take them seriously.
I really have noticed people getting a lot less tolerant in the last few years. I blame a lot of it on irrational political rhetoric, like Lars Larson on the radio or High Country Times and the Sierra Club in print. Those people make a living rousing the rabble. To keep the money rolling in, they have to become more and more extreme. They need someone to demonize.
Unfortunately, a lot of ignorant people get sucked into the rhetoric. Laughing at them is a good start.

I sold furniture to Lars in Portland....He was not a nice guy. Treated us lowley furniture sales people like crap.
To bad Roseburg has become so Neo Conservative. Its usually the case when you have a population with very few college grads. Thats probably going to tick people off, but its a fact. You can research it. Areas with the fewest college grads and low education tend to vote republican. Every election the republicans just have to say the libs are going to take their guns away, and that gays will over run the city. Throw in a word about God, and wullah, you have Guns, Gays, and God. The same Diatribe every election.

It's not just the neocons who get led around by the nose. Look at the mess the neolibs have made out of our national forests. One of my rabid tree hugger friends was disparaging the worth of Biscuit Fire salvage timber, pointing out that the lumber companies were bidding almost nothing for salvage rights. I pointed out it depended on how close the tree was growing to a lawyer. There's no point in bidding on tree salvage if you are going to be tied up in court until it rots.
I have to admit that I voted against Al Gore because of his gun control program. When my pro-abortion friends pitched a fit, I said, "Sorry, I have to vote for my rights first. Women can wait until the next election." Sadly, the next election was not any better. I didn't vote for either of them. I was relieved that Kerry lost and depressed that Bush won.
Local politics in Douglas County are not as conservative as you might think. There is a long tradition of issue orientation in Oregon Republicans. If a politician lets ideology lead them into idiocy, the voters have little patience. There was a county commissioner who lost the primary, and then his primary opponent lost the general election to a democrat, because he was letting the right wing nut cases lead him around by the nose. The voters also got up a petition and passed it to make county commissioner a nonpartisan position. That cuts the political parties completely out of the system.
Southern Oregon received a lot of refugees from the South after the Civil War. They were carpetbagged out of their farms, and had to find somewhere cheap. Southern Oregon still suffers from the Southern habit of taking religion seriously. Layered on top of that is a population of ageing, neopagan, left-wing hippies who showed up during the '70s as a part of the Back to the Land movement, and a bunch of Libertarian survivalists who started to dig bunkers in the '80s. The most recent influx is moneyed Californians looking for a suburb that hasn't been built out yet. They are building these godawful McMansions, totally unsuited for either their lifestyle or the land they are located on. It's like Frank Lloyd Wright never lived. Besides, who in their right mind builds a huge multi-story house to retire in? They put gates on their driveway, before they figure out that the only reasonable way to shop is by UPS.
I don't have much trouble making friends, but I avoid discussing religion or politics. If someone insists, I have no problem offending them, which I probably will do no matter what flavor they are. It helps to have a sense of the absurd.

well said, and Kudos for serveral good points. I would like to make a small rebuttle. Al Gore does not want to take away your hunting gear. No dem/lib/progressive wants to take away your personal registered guns you use to protect your family. We (we libs that is) do beleive that assault weapons have only one use, the military. Your sadness about Bush is felt by 70 percent. Your commentary leads me to beleive that your not a Neo con, and that you probably know whats happening in our society. You are probably aware that bush ended the Assault weapon ban arn't you? Even the NRA did not approve of that move.

It's just west of Old Hwy 99, across the road (Del Rio?) from the sawmill. There will probably be somebody there with an AR-15 who will let you shoot it. You will find that, just like any other rifle, it goes bang when you pull the trigger, and that's about it. The AR-15 in .223 has turned out to be a crowd pleaser for coyote hunting, and is amazingly accurate. It is also popular for long range target matches.
So-called "assault weapons" had no more or less capability than any other hunting rifle. They just *looked* spooky, so the anti-gun nuts waved them around and scared people.
BTW, the Rod and Gun Club charges $72 a year for family membership. They have indoor and outdoor pistol ranges, a 5-station trap range, sporting clays, rifle and black powder ranges, archery range, a 5 acre bass lake and Umpqua River frontage. It's the best recreation deal in Douglas County.

Well, Ill give this round to you, as I am "out gunned" on my knowledge of specific assault weapons. Not sure why coyete hunting is 1st rate with the assault weapon buyers in Los Angeles, Detroit, DC, NY City, but I will leave this topic for someone who has a better grasp on it. Beyond my .22 riffle, which I use for Target practice only, I am out of my league. No one is going to make a dent in the way either one of us feel.

"Paper" money is made out of cotton NOT paper. Common error. But, I see your point.

If cost of living in Oregon is higher than any where in US, you haven't lived in San Luis Obispo CA
