When we met I had never been to California. He took me and the kid's to
Six flags, san fran, and santa cruz. Anyway....... He had warned me about the traffic. When we hit the first freeway. I found out he wasn't kidding. I said (just stay slow and safe in the slow lane honey). My husband was like are you kidding go slow they will run us over. (No bid deal for him he was use to driving in cal)
We were in san fran, We were driving around I pulled out my video camera and started filming some people that looked like gand members. My husband started yelling at me do not film "THE PEOPLE". We also saw a man painted all silver with silver clothes dancing like a Robot for money. He let us take a picture with him.
We went to that town that has the winchester house. shoot what was the name of that town. We had been driving all day and stopped at an "ATM" at night to get money for a motel. (Not smart) I grew up in a small town but I guess my husband should of known better.

We leave the Atm and pull into a parking spot at the motel.
My husband is in the drivers seat reading one of those road traveling coupon books my six year old was in the front .my seven year old was in the back with me. I was sitting in the back with my two mo .old daughter.
This car pulls up next to us . Five young 16-25 year olds. They were all talking except for the guy in the backseat. I had a bad feeling. My husband said not to stair at anyone. But I looked that guy strait in the eye. We locked eyes and never looked away. My husband was still reading out loud to me. Everyone in that car started to reach for the door handles to get out and that guy in the back seat yelled "stop they have kid's"
I told my husband back out of here "NOW" He said why you do not like this motel. He hadn't noticed the car next to us.
We stayed at a different motel in town but the next morning drove by that spot. They were not there. Doubt they were there for a motel.
They more than likely followed us from the atm and noticed the Oregon tags.
I will never forget thar guy in the backseat.
What do you think they would of done?
You were tracked by a gang. The least that would have happened is you would have been robbed and probably car jacked. Most likely been cut up and maybe killed. Not so long ago, our local tv news warned people about driving at night in Oakland CA. Mostly blacks and many gangs. One gangs OM was they drove at night with thier headlighs off. If someone were to flash their lights at them letting them know their lights were off, they would follow you and kill all inside your car. This is all true. Plus many other warnings from our newscasts. Thank your lucky stars that you are alive. You came very close to being severly hurt. skitow

The headlights flashing thing is an urban legend. Do a search on Snopes for "gang headlights" to see a full explanation.

And skitow, come on. Keep the racist comments to yourself.

I didn't find Skitow's posts re: Asian drivers & Black gangs to be racists. I'm Asian and didn't find her posts to be derogatory and I am also victimized by gangs from a certain ethnic group (property damage). If I called them out, would I be racists too? IF true, we need to be able to call it like we see it w/o being labeled as a bigot.

I think the only countries that drive the other side are Japan & Malaysia & Singapore.

Backtracking for a minute. I didn't say I haven't made any friends or that people here aren't friendly in the stores, etc. What I said was I haven't met any friendly neighbors or any close friends. Where I come from you speak to your neighbors when you're outside and you invited friends over to dinner etc. We have been to three families houses in the two years we have lived here. I invited all the girls from my daughters extra curriculur activity over last Christmas for a party and despite that they all had a wonderful time we have only been invited back to parties etc. by two of the girls out of nine. We have made the effort on many occassions to befriend people beyond the superficial and I find it difficult here. The people who seem to be the friendliest are from CA or the east coast. Just my experience.

I have never made a racist comment on this forum, and will never do so.

Default Ex-Iowans

I just read all the comments about Oregonians and outsiders. Thanks, everyone, for your inputs. I grew up in Des Moines, Iowa, the capitol city, and dreamed of living in a small town or in the country when I was free. I spent 17 of the past 22 years living in no.CA, until I was priced out. I lived in Pt. Reyes Station for 9 of those years, and thought I would spend the rest of my life there -- the cows, the beaches, the small town atmosphere all were my dream come true. How desperately I searched to find ANYWHERE there that I could afford, to no avail. I left with a broken heart and have been sort of wandering since then, until I returned to Iowa to help out my elderly parents. But I have a friend in Myrtle Creek who keeps nagging me to come visit and move there, and I've been researching M.C. and Roseburg area, and I'm hoping to move in the spring or early summer. I think my Iowa license plates and upbringing will make it easier for me to meet people and make friends. I'll stay a bit quiet about my CA background. Anybody have anything to tell me about Myrtle Creek and Roseburg area? Any ex-Iowans out there who want to fill me in on the compatibility of our two cultures? Thanks.... Kate the Great

As long as they check their attitudes at the door, I say "Welcome!"

I'd say if you're from the Midwest, Oregonians won't have a beef with you. I think the prevaling belief is that when you hear "outsiders", it actually means Californians. I think a lot of people from Oregon resent the SoCal type of attitude for whatever reason. I'm from eastern WA and I've heard of this before, despite there being so many Cali transplants in OR--maybe that's the reason. Good luck.

I'm not from Iowa but I think you'll fit in all right. The weather there should be a bit more gentle than Iowa. Making friends in a smaller town is usually easier too. I know someone up there mentioned not being able to make friends in Portland but I've always found smaller towns to be more friendly.

Take the trip to Myrtle Creek and see how you like it. I think it's a nice small country town. Roseburg would be the nearest big city but it's still not too big of a city.
