Sonoma County is very beautiful. Tons (and I mean Tons) of grapes, there is still some other agriculture left - somewhat seasonal weather (wet and dry seasons). I do believe the housing market is more expensive in Sonoma County than it is in San Luis Obispo. Jobs pay well in Sonoma County compaired to all of Oregon, but it's a fairly expensive area to live.

Smile Taxes do not go up based on new purchase price

[quote=Just Lookin;2317402]I am kind of concerned about the property taxes in Oregon. I don't really understand what your property tax is. I read this and am now more confused. How does this work? If I buy a home at $175,00 what is my taxes going to be?
How do you find out what taxes you will pay. Is this saying you don't have a percentage rate for all of Oregon?
Like we pay 1% of the selling price. QUOTE]

If you buy a house for $175,000 your taxes will be whatever they were for the previous owner. The tax assessed value won't change based on your purchase price. Next year they will probably go up, but Measure 5 in '97(?) severely limited how much it can go up. They can't go up more than about 3-5%. So even if your home value goes up 10%, taxes don't follow.

Also, the tax millage rate is limited in how much it can go up. (Measure 50, '95) So they can't raise the millage rate to make up for the fact that they can't raise the assessed value.

AND, we don't have a transfer tax, in case that's what you mean by the 1%.

I have never lived in Oregon, I did live in Tacoma for ten years but I now live in western Montana. I grew up in San Diego and I miss a few things like all the thousands of restaurants. (I think it's up to 4500 now) ! I would never move back there or to Wa. I really can't see moving to Oregon either. The last year we were in San Diego we were robbed three times.
Here we don't even need door locks and it's nice to watch a procession of elk and deer wandering through the front yard in the morning ! We have had a lion hanging around in town for the last few weeks. I have seen wolves in our valley and there are 40 grizzlies in the mountain range just behind our town. You can't put a dollar value on what is left of our lives. We get older every day and we have just one shot at life.
Don't waste it chasing after dollars.

Thank you Sharonaly, I understand now what you are saying. That makes it more clear.

It is expensive to live there still, I loved the 18 years I was there.

Certain areas of the county produce corn and other veggies, and tons of fruit.

I really miss it.

KyroPDX is on a distinguished road
Moved to Portland right after college, 13 years ago. It reminds me of the bay area just not as congested. I enjoy everything about this city!

Given the proper financial support and incentives I would live in Sausalito, CA. The area, as I remember, was my dream community.

Rickers, what was your point for posting on a forum that asked about people from California moving to Oregon? You've never lived here. You live in Montana. You're entitled to your opinion, but shouldn't you be posting on the Montana site? Am I missing something? What relevance do you have?

I post any where I want Bob but I'm very sorry to have offended you by having no relevance. However if you want to ask a moderator to remove it I couldn't care less !
Montana and Oregon both have lots of people moving up from California for many of the same reasons.
I am somehow reminded of the many reasons I left So Cal and some of those reasons are why I didn't choose Oregon as a place to live.
