hmmmm
so the day i wrote that I was feeling the winter blues..missing my family and friends from SD. I really like where I live in Oregon now and although I plan to move again one day to either Hawaii or Australia...right now I'm pretty happy exploring everything this beautiful state has to offer..It's different here and that's the main reason I moved... to do something different. this place is awesome for hiking! Theres a new trail everytime i turn around...
There are only some people that don't like California people here....They have never bothered me one bit! By the Way The Spring Winds here ROCK!..So Clean!!!!

Hi,
I'm thinking of relocating to San Louis Obispo or Ashland, Or. Did you know about either or both? Anything you know would be helpful. I'm a writer so I wouldn't be looking for a job, just nice people and decent weather. Thanks.

Pluses: less crowded. Housing WAS more affordable in relation to income. Green.
Minuses: Lots of rednecks. Old money/small business that hates taxes and doesn't want their workers educated - so poor support for higher ed and community colleges. Very poor salaries in higher education.
Rain. Not deluges, but postnasal drip. Portland, Eugene, and Ashland resemble the Bay Area; Medford and Bend resemble Orange County, the rest resembles the Sacramento Valley. Anyone beg to differ let's hear it.

Well, I beg to agree! Especially the postnasal drip part - very funny! Gotta go with you on the redneck part...Portland resembles the Bay Area? Really? I don't get that one.

My dad retired to Ashland and he loves it. It has a lot of culture for a town its size, decent restaurants, great plays and friendly people.

We moved from Thousand Oaks, Ca to Ashland two years ago after my DH retired. Our DD lives in Solvang and we visit the area often. I love San Luis Obispo.
BUT, it is expensive. It is also expensive. Don't forget, it is expensive.
Ashland housing isn't cheap but apart from that, most things are reasonable. We are very happy here. The climate is just right in that we have four distinct but not harsh seasons (although it can get hot for a couple of months in the summer). The only thing missing for us is water. I love the beach but would settle for a lake or river. If we move, it will be to find a similar home and town on some kind of water.

I just left a community college, and I thought the faculty was paid pretty well. Hate taxes? Oregon taxes plenty. More than most states. There's no reason at all that the state shouldn't be loaded with all that they tax people. Maybe they should stop handing out welfare to stoners....

Kathleen, we must be former neighbors!
Hi Kathleen54, My hubby and I live in Newbury Park, CA, and we are coming up in October to look at Eugene and the coast. I've read your posts before and didn't realize you had lived so close to us. Ashland sure looks cute, but like you we want to be closer to the water. (We have lived in NP for 24 years and I love being close to the ocean, also my DH loves to fish!) We really want to live on the coast, probably Newport, but our daughter is still living with us and going to college, so we thought Eugene would be a good compromise. Speaking of SLO, We were hoping to find a town with a similar vibe. One of the only things I do not like about Thousand Oaks is that there is no center of town to walk around, shop and eat (there are malls but thats not the same)..............So, if you have any advise for us, please share some,( what has been the biggest change for you?), Thanks kindly, in advance

I am considering relocating to Portland or Eugene just so my son can attend a Waldorf charter school. I have visited Portland before and I thought it was lovely. I now live in San Diego and prior to that I was in NYC, I am absolutely sick of big cities, traffic, waiting lines for everything. I would love to hear from parents out there and their experience raising their kids, and things to do specially nature things.
Thanks!

What do you think of Eugene and Corvallis? What are they like? What is the vibe? How are jobs, housing, etc? I already know the home prices, so please talk about what its like to live there. Any good Indian or Thai food? Any downtown or nice shopping area?
