My parents live in Coos Bay, and they love it. I hated going there when I was a kid because my grandmother lived in the country and there was not much to do. Now my husband and I make the trek from Mississippi to Coos Bay at least once a year to visit and vacation. It has a certain appeal to it. There is nothing like going to Shore Acres and watching the big waves of a storm coming in. In my opinion the only thing it really lacks is decent shopping, but hey, that's what computers are for right?

lol, i totally agree with you about the only lack being decent shopping, but my husband insists that that is a major PLUS instead! lol
Although, it does make for a great excuse to do a full day shopping trip to Lincoln City or Eugene!

My husband and father would agree with yours. My mom on the other hand calls me to have things shipped to her. She is not good with computers, so I do it for her. Its kinda fun though, we shop together from clear across country. The one thing they really need there is a Home Depot or Lowes. It would be nice to have options of where to shop, and that is not a type of store you want to have to go far for.

Love visiting Coos Bay. We live in Oregon City, but it is our favorite place to ride our quads. We usually go to Winchester, or Coos Bay, and we see a lot of So Cal people who drive up just to vacation at the dunes. The fishing and hiking are also awesome, you won't be disappointed.

Coosbay is very scenic.Lot's to do if your into outdoors.Beaches,Dunes,Rivers,Camping,Fishing,4-5 hours from skiing.
I think the winter temp is about 65,summer 70.
That can pretty much be said for any oregon coast city.I think Coosbay is the largest on the coast.
Job market depends on what you do.Building trade has always been pretty good,
More so south of Coosbay. Most coastal cites are service/tourist based economies now.
The area is isolated from the rest of the state so it doesn't quite have the same feel as the willamite valley or rouge valley.Outside of the city limits your going to have a tough time getting things like cable or DSL.
I prefer living in the middle or Oregon east of the coast mountain range. It gets warmer there in the summer.and it's still close enough to make a day trip to the beach, mountians or bigger cities like eugene or portland.
If your looking for outdoors you can't go wrong anywhere in western oregon.
Or in the cascades if you like the snow.

Tiffela74 recently put a post on the "why are the biggest cities off the coast" thread that says Coos Bay has a great hospital and she had good experience with it. This is important for those of you expecting to have a family, or aging, or just for the unexpected. It differs a bit from the impression I got from an article in The World (?) the local paper, about some panic about loosing all the doctors....

I grew up in Myrtle Point. Weather is much nicer there but horrible place to raise kids, there is nothing to do. I also lived in Coos Bay and was there often growing up and I hate the weather. It is to rainy, windy and cold. I always have a coat with me when living in or visiting family in Coos Bay. For kids it is horrible nothing to do. Some kids turn out okay but there is alot of drugs and alcohol with teenagers. But I do love the ocean. Just bundle up and enjoy the weather at the beach or the dunes. But just keep in mind if anyone with kids is considering we moved away so our child would not grow up in such a economically depressed area.

Ya---I worked at the hospital for 16 years and it and the doctors have changed and I can not say for the better. Those of you not in the medical field maybe can not understand what I am talking about but think about this----why such a change over in Drs and and so may from foreign countries. Drs when I worked there, started and retired. Now, they come and go and that is not a good thing for continuity of care. Do not get me wrong, their are still some good Drs but be warned, they are retiring. Alot, of Drs do not want to be so rural.
