Most people will know that in a good climate, blue skies and sunshine are not noteworthy: they're the expected norm.

It's true that sunny days do occur on the Oregon coast, just as rainy days occur in southern Arizona. But it's also a reminder that there is a law of probability issue with their frequency of occurrence. However heavenly the sunny days may be, 236 overcast days a year is a lot. That's what Coos Bay logs as an annual average, and that doesn't include the partly cloudy days. Admittedly there are people who need green beside them more than blue above them, and for those who prefer predominantly cool cloudy weather, the Oregon coast can be paradise. But do understand what you're getting into with the coast's Jekyll-and-Hyde climate. It's not for everybody.
I often wonder when I read some of these continual postings of the glorious Coast weather that perhaps after our 30 years of visits/vacations/Holidays to the area to visit our family, if there has been some evidence of global warming or a shift in the poles that turned the Oregon Coast into the Southern California coast.
Its a beautiful, glorious place for all to enjoy, but Steve brings reality to the picture. Of course there are lovely days of sunny weather, but that has been the exception over the rule for us and for my family, who has lived there for decades ,and who are those special birds that thrive on the clouds, grey and drizzle to keep their English Rose complexions. : ).

Steve's reality of the Oregon coast=doom and gloom is not my reality. Sorry. My reality, also, having lived in "sunny" California is that heat can get to one faster than anything. So, the mild temperate climate here is my heaven. Yes, we have drizzle on the coast, yes, we have rain, but we have many days of perfect weather too...and we always have clean and fresh air. I wouldn't trade that for anything. I chuckle when I read some of the descriptions of my coastal climate. I say, "what?!" I live here and that is not the way it is. As has been posted before, people interested in getting a real picture , should monitor coastal webcams.

Im totally with Oregonbeachlover.
And I have to wonder, why is it that those of us who live here and are posting about what its like being argued against by those who DONT live here and are not here? Ive never said its sunny and clear each and every day, but frankly, its NOT a rare occurance or something that everyone stumbles out of their homes, rubbing their eyes and exclaiming' "OMG!!!! Whats that big yellow thing in the sky?? Why is there not rain falling?!?!" I also post picture of my kids smiling, laughing, and having a great time on my facebook about as often as I post pics of beautiful days on here, but thats not saying that because I do, its the only times they are happy and smiling so Im trying to document every time it happens.
Ya, it rains here, it mists here, heck, i got all wet going to work the other morning, it was about 6.00am and the mist was so heavy it was like going through a car wash! But I also was able to eat lunch outside w/o a jacket or umbrella a few hours later. Had to grab a sweatshirt for my early evening walk and wore a hat cuz it was a bit overcast and looked like it might think about drizzling, but then the next few days, ive eaten my lunch outside, can see the barges/ships coming in from off on the horizon because its so darn clear.
Some postings make me think of one of the girls I work with. She was talking to someone from another state and I hear here say "Oh yeah, the Oregon coast, yeah, its raining, its almost ALWAYS raining here" I look out the window and can see nothing but clear blue skies so I asked her "What were you talking about?!?" and she says "Thats what some people want to hear, they dont want to hear its nice here! They want to talk about how its all nasty and rainy and wet all the time. So thats what I'm gonna tell them. "
its 830am and the sun is shining, I have plans to be outside again today enjoying this wonderful weather on our beautiful coast. Not because its unusual and all, but because I actually have the day off and family here to enjoy life with me.

so I figured Id better post this, today is overcast. Its about 65degrees, very calm, warm enough im in slacks and a light shortsleeved shirt today, but yup, overcast. Still loving it here. Talked to a man in line for coffee this morning who told me he moved here from out of state (not gonna say from where..) but that he wakes up each and every day and is happy with his choice of moving here. As he says "We are so blessed to live in such a place, Im thankful each day that I live here" Me too Mister....me too.

Oregonbeachlover will become famous soon enoughOregonbeachlover will become famous soon enough
Last night, it got overcast and foggy here. (I guess I should've posted that ). This morning it was somewhat overcast. I went to work for about 2 hours and now it is blue skies and beautiful. I'm not in Coos Bay, but the beautiful Oregon coast IS the beautiful Oregon coast no matter which part. Because of this forum and some of the Oregon coast doom and gloomers on it, I frequently ask people I run into and I know have moved here from other parts of Oregon or other states, this question: "How do you like living on the Oregon coast?". I cannot think of a single time a person told me they had regrets.

The weather in the area is generally nice from May to October. November to March is generally cloudy and/or rainy with temps in the 40's to low 50's with strong winds common on the coast. There can be some occasional nice days during the 6 month rainy season.

I have been fishing for steelhead in Jan. in my shirt sleeves, but generally it is 43 degrees with a 20 MPH wind and rain, heavy at times during the fishing season. The wind in winter can be 75 to 100 MPH south of Coos. The rivers get "Blown Out" for a reason, average rain in Dec. around is 9 to 12 inches.

There is often a cold rain storm in early June, and it will rain again in Sept. causing the blackberries to mold.
The weather is what it is.

I wish my blackberries would mold. They are trying to takeover my yard. Yes, the wind storms are my least favorite part of living on the coast. Luckily, they are infrequent, and they do not last too long. I don't go out and "storm watch" (a very fun thing to do!!) during high winds. I stay inside with my hot cocoa, coffee, or glass of wine. If you can find a place to view the ocean during the high winds, it is exciting to watch. It whips logs around like they were toothpicks. What I think of during those times is that the beach will bring all kinds of new treasures now. It is so exciting to live on the coast!

so I just thought this was cool, so i wanted to post it. Id never experienced a company meeting quite like this living anywhere else....
So, I was at work, we have weekly staff meetings. It was so nice, we all trooped outside, sat around picnic tables for the meeting, and got a special guest. As we were going through discussions, here comes a deer. Just wandered up, nibbling on brush and grass, coming within about 10feet of our group. So here we are, sittin in the sunshine, a light breeze carrying the scent of the sea to us, the boat horns as theyre coming into the bay and all the beautiful woods around us. Add the deer, and wow. Never had staff meetings like that before moving here. Yup, life is good.

Life cannot get any better than that! Also, no amount of money can buy it either.
