lol, funny how everybody knows a "hillbilly" but hardly anybody actually admits to being one (or, maybe they just don't recognize it). lol, that's my thought for the day.

I live in Coos Bay and would like to know what the poster meant by Hillbillys. There are plenty of wonderful, well educated and well rounded people living here. Possibly you see people as hillbillys just because we have different values and morals? That many people here would rather spend the day out on the beach, or at Empire Lakes with their children than trying to outdo the neighbors w/the new toys...or that many people have their own gardens and therefore, raise their own fresh veggies/fruits....that we dress more for the weather than to impress you?
theres a HUGE difference between San Diego and Coos Bay and for the most part, if you enjoy the lifestyle that SD has to offer, youre NOT going to enjoy the very different lifestyle CB offers. Not saying one is better than the other, just that they are quite different. How much time did you invest in checking it out before you moved here?

Let's see, you moved from San Diego County with 3+ million people to Coos County with 65000, right? And it never crossed your mind that there might be a SLIGHT difference in the type of people?

Actually, probably not a good idea of that poster to slam the people along the South Coast. Our "hillbillies" are probably the older generation Southern California hippies.
I like the people along the South Coast of Oregon. Yeah, so we dress for the elements but we're out there getting things done. The real people, genuine.

That type of attitude is one of the reasons I want out of Southern California!!!

I did mean it past tense.

I thought hillbillies were in the Appalachians. Isn't the western version called redneck?

Ya, I wondered about the OP settling in coastal OR and expecting it to be like SD. Kinda stereotypical southern Californian that gives them a bad rep. It is very crowded down there. I was amazed at how there is just no open space left.

I made the similar move from San Diego to Coos Bay. Try and look at it like this- Oregon is Different from California because it's exactly that- DIFFERENT. Could that be one of the reasons you moved in the first place? to maybe try something different...Maybe you just miss where you are from. That is okay. I miss parts of San Diego too. You may not even stay in Oregon for the rest of your life so soak up what you get here!

I'm sorry you're so miserable in Coos Bay.

Is it safe to assume you didn't spend much time researching it before you moved there? I find that happens with a lot of people who move to Oregon; they fall in love with what they see while on vacation or something, but don't really know what it's like year round.

I found a lot of hillbillies, aka rednecks, when I lived in the Applegate Valley, and visited surrounding areas. Most men looked like lumber jacks, and women on the whole didn't have much of a sense of style.

You have to remember though, they dress for the weather. Heck, I even started looking like a lumber jack after a few years of living there, and I'm a woman! LOL Seriously though, I only dressed that way out of necessity to stay warm, it certainly didn't make me feel very feminine.

I wish you well in finding a place to live that you like better, I'm in the same boat after having moved to Texas.

I so agree with you. People really "need" to research ALL aspects of where they're interested in moving to, because 9 times out of 10, it's not like what it seems on the surface.
