With so much negative on this board I keep reading about Oregon, and those who live here, I just really wanted to share my personal story that we have been living with for the last month.
My youngest daughter, she just turned six, came to me about a month ago saying she was peeing blood. Well, I thought since her older sister had recently started puberty, she was just saying that to copy her. Especially when I asked to see this, and she giggled and said she had already flushed. Until the next morning. When I caught her before she flushed, and to my horror, found a toilet full of what looked like old, dark ketchup. Now, of course, we dont have medical insurance at this time. But nothing will stop me from taking my child in when there is a prob. So, I talked to a general dr that I know, and he said it might be a silent UTI, to flush her for 24hrs, and talk to him again. Well, we waited til the next morning, when it was just as bad, and I couldnt take it anymore. I took her to the local low cost clinic, where they told me this was more than they could handle, and sent her up to the pediatric clinic at the hospital. So I took her up, for what started out the begaining of many many tests. I told them upfront, I have no insurance. That it wont defer me from getting my daughter treated, but we'd need a serious payment plan. Well guess what? This wondeful Dr, volunteered to treat my daughter, free of charge. No office visit fees, no in office testing fees, nothing. The only thing we have to pay for is the lab fees they had to send out. It turned out my little girl has a very serious kidney disorder, that is quite uncommon. THey ended up having to bring in a consultant who is a pediatric kidney specialist. Guess what? He also, has donated all his time. The nurses are wonderful, they all have taken to my little girl, and are simply incredible with her. The Dr takes as much time with her as I need, answering every question, never rushing me or getting irritated. Then, as we sent out word among friends and family, not only did they all begin to pray for her and send us well wishes, but it went on fromthere, To people we have never met, some who we never will, praying for my daughter and offering their help. To the incredible family at my work who have pretty much adopted my daughter and I as their own family who handed me a check for 100.00 to help cover the lab fees and a whole box and bag of clothes for my girls, with hugs. To friends and neighbors who have brought over food and other gifts. The people up the road from Yureka, the family the road over who've lived here for 3generations. People who have offered up babysitting, and those who live up 5hrs away by the childrens hospital where we thought to have to admit her opening their homes to my entire family for as long as needed. I cant tell you how much my phone rang, with offers and well wishes. To the clerk at the local grocery store who hugged me and said she'd pray for us when I broke down in the store the day we started all this. I cant begin to tell you how many wonderful people have helped us through this. Some who ive never known before. . And guess what? we found out, just a few days ago, that it looks like my little girl has beat this thing. That she is probably going to be just fine. And can you know what happened as we started spreading that wonderful news? Just as many incredible people calling, texting, emailing, and stopping by to share in our joy. Still offering their prayers and support. I for one, am so very thankful to live in such a place with so many wonderful people. Who have taken time and all from their own lives to try and help my family and I with ours. So dont tell me that most Oregonians are awful, rude, mean, spiteful and greedy. That most are out to make a buck, no matter who they step on. Dont say people are unfriendly and cruel, not when Ive been hugged by a grocery clerk who didnt even know my name or even most of our story. Or when each nurse and Dr has made every office visit as fun and cheerful for my little one that they can. Not to mention all the $$$ they couldve been making. Im proud to be an Oregonian and Im thankful to live among so many generous and warm hearted folks.
Tiffany.
btw, sorry for the long post, and i wont be shocked if its deleted, but if one person reads it and understands what im trying to say, its worth it.

I understand exactly what you are saying. We had a similar experience, and the people of Oregon have never let us down either.
Thanks for sharing. You are in our prayers.

I am sure the oregon health plan for children will be footing a majority of your bill. This is a nationwide trend that the president only recently signed to cover children who have not health insurance because of their parents not covering them. The docs do not get enough compensation so many donate their services, that is why they are in the medical field and no doctor could ever turn away a child. I can not imagine the worries you are facing, are you at Dornbecher? They have good support services for families.

What a heart warming story!

Last winter (while I still lived in the Applegate Valley), I was really struggling. I was seperated from my husband, who basically deserted me once we started living in seperate households. I had no close friends, and no family in the area.

I heated with wood and had piles of split wood all over the place, but most of it was cut too long for the woodstove. I quickly went through what wood I could use due to the lengthy sub-freezing weather.

I started attending Applegate Christian Fellowship (AWESOME CHURCH!!!), and from there was befriended by a couple who took me under their wing. They brought me wood from the church, came over and cut some of the wood I already had, cleaned my chimney when it got clogged from burning wood that was too damp, etc. They invited me to various church events, and were basically just "great" Christian people! Through the church I started making lots of wonderful friends.

It broke my heart to leave my church family behind when I moved. I haven't been able to find another church like it as yet.

Thank you so much for sharing your story. I will surely keep your daughter, you, and your family in my prayers.
