Redmond has much less industry and employment opportunities. The city has fewer amenities and, thus, is less desirable than Bend. The level of income and education is lower in Redmond. The main reason, IMHO, is that the views in Redmond are not as good as in Bend for most people. I personally think the views are better because there is less of a hill between Redmond and the mountains and it is more centrally located to the views of the mountains. Redmond just does not have the snooty air that Bend has and, for some reason, people seem willing to pay the price for the snooty atmosphere.

from photos, they're both beautifull!
For a possible future transplant, being closer to the airport is a major plus.

I think there is a branch of Central Oregon Community College in Redmond, but the closest University is in the Valley.

Default outdoorenjoyer

I recently moved to Redmond Or. and love it here. Sunny cold winter days and warm sunny summers that cool down at night. Bend has gotten out of control, but i'm close enough to bend to enjoy the wonderful food, and shopping. It does rain occasionally but not for long. The sky at dusk can do amazing things with color behind the horizon of mountains. Any kind of recreation available with many options.

Here's a few reasons why the region is so "hot". If we could stand the winters, that's where we'd be going.

South Twin Lake

We moved to Bend from Cincinnati about 1-1/2 yrs ago. I first visited Bend about 20 yrs ago and always remembered it. I love it here. The scenery is beautiful... Drake Park in downtown is beautiful with the Deschutes River running thru it... in the summer, there is always something going on there. the downtown is always safe to walk with lots of small shops and places to eat. They have a newer area - Old Mill District - where they have more yupie shops - Gap, Banana Republic, J.Jill, etc. For a small city, they have a lot going on almost all the time. We live in the NE side of Bend and have also lived in the SW side. Both sides have their advantages.... I think I prefer the SW side which is closer to Old Mill/movies and great parks. The winters are a little longer/colder than what I expected, but we do get plenty of sunshine and the air is clean.... people that have lived here for years resent all of the newcomers, especially the CA people moving in with a lot of money. It is pretty expensive here.... our house in Cinti was a lot bigger and much larger lot, BUT you don't have to pump your gasoline and there is NO sales tax! But, I have found everyone to be very friendly and very courteous.

Here's another picture of Little Lava Lake. Please excuse the fishing pole. The lakes, rivers, and mountains in the Bend area are like a postcard everywhere you look.

2nancy,

These pictures were taken for my own use and it seemed a shame not to try to capture some of the beauty we saw. I never thought I'd be sharing them on the internet. I posted them, and others, because people were writing about the beauty of the Bend area. I didn't take any pictures of towns like Clearl2land (Dan) did, so maybe his pictures are more what you're looking for.
My intererest on our last trip revolved around the fishing and the surrounding country of the towns we were interested in moving to, which I think is at least as important as what you see in town and on the inside of your new house. Recreation is important to most people who want to stay active even after they retire.

I tried fishing in downtown Bend but didn't have much luck casting into the asphalt. Guess I should have tried a different fly!
